I'll get to the Bruins game in a moment, but first, I'd like to address something.

Last week after the Jets game, I said some critical things about the top 6 forwards. Let me clarify. Derek Roy had a good three games, yes. However, in the 12 previous games, ONE goal. Not acceptable for the "number one center". Drew Stafford has 4 goals. Yes, he scored in the win vs Calgary, but the last goal before that was vs Pittsburgh October 15th, a stretch of 7 games. Maybe I'm being too unrealistic on this one, but I expect more than three goals from Nathan Gerbe. Leino? Nothing offensively. Captain Pominville? He's been OK. I guess I'm being a little too selfish for wanting a little more from #29.

Vanek? No problem there. He's fine.

In hindsight, Twitter probably wasn't the best medium for this particular discussion. I needed more than 140 characters to make my point clearly. Maybe I'm being too hard on them. After all, they had won 4 straight (before the Bruins game, which I'll get to in a sec). With Terry Pegula's purchase of the Sabres sending everyone into a frenzy, the expectations have gone through the roof.

As far as the Bruins game Saturday night is concerned, I'm not going to get worked up over a loss. They had won 4 straight before this. I'm more pissed about the Lucic hit on Miller. Somebody should have done something. Yeah, Lucic's big, bad, and in the words of Pierre Mcguire, a monster. Lucic's physically intimidating, I get it, but still..........

No, I don't want Vanek to go punch Lucic. Here's the understatement of the century: Vanek's gonna get his jaw or hand broken by Lucic. He's too valuable to lose for the season. I don't want anyone touching Lucic. Someone could have knocked down Tim Thomas, or Nathan Horton, or Tyler Seguin, or someone, though. Gaustad was out there on the ice at the time, but who else? Regehr? He was brought in for toughness, supposedly. This quote's the best he could do: "You want to stick up for one another and be there for one another. Do I think we could have done a better job of that? Yeah. Yeah, I do." Myers? He got knocked down by a pixie Tuesday vs Winnipeg. Sekera? Pffft!!!! Hell, I'm still waiting for this team to respond to Johnny Boychuk's antics from the playoffs two years ago.

They're soft. I'm not saying. People in the know are saying it. Respected people. People who have forgotten more about hockey than I'll ever know are saying. Billy Jaffe on MSG's "hockey night live" Saturday apparently called them soft. Mike Milbury (yes, I know what you're going to say about Milbury, and while I agree, save it. There will be other times to address his stupidity) apparently was baffled by the lack of response.

This quote from the NESN game recap says it all: "But the Sabres are a new school type of team. They tucked their tails between their legs and let themselves be run out of the building."

That hit, and the lack of any retaliation, sent the game down the tubes.

If Buffalo goes out and wins 4 or 5 in a row, will we forget this incident. Probably. Until the Bruins show up on the schedule again. We shouldn't, though. They are getting killed nationally. Take this, put it on the bulletin board and build off it. It should never happen again. And it shouldn't be forgotten.

"Entertainment" During The Rain @ Nationals Park

I could have gone by plane and got there in an hour or less. I could have gotten in the car and drove to both. I went by bus. Riding on the bus feels like a throwback to days gone by, before planes were the big thing. You get a chance to see America. Not just Pittsburgh and Baltimore and your big cities. I'm talking about Sunbury, PA and Cockeysville, MD. Look out the window and see people mowing the lawn or going to the store. Going about their lives. Going through the towns at 2 AM still is interesting, even if nothing's open. It's also real good for the budget.

Yet, I found something peculiar.On the way to Washington, the bus stop for Harrisburg is the parking lot of a mall. Not ideal, but understandable. The bus stop for Baltimore is also in a mall parking lot. Really? Don't understand that. You would think a big city like Baltimore would have their stop downtown. During my Pittsburgh trip, we stopped in Erie. Actually, it was the Presque Isle Casino outside(?) Erie. Go look for Presque Isle Casino on google maps, I dare you. You won't find it. We stopped at a place that doesn't exist. AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as the games I saw? The Pirates defeated the Cardinals 5-4 in 11 innings despite Albert Pujols' 30th HR of the season. Garrett Jones hit a walkoff HR in the 11th into the Allegheny river. The Dodgers beat the Nats 7-4 in game one of what was supposed to be a traditional doubleheader. Game 2 got rained out.

All in all, it was fun! Which is what this is supposed to be about.

Staying Busy

Hi world! I'm still here. I haven't left or anything. Life got in the way of this blog and twitter. As such, I haven't been able to give my thoughts on...well...THINGS!!! So...................

Sabres offseason stuff: The Regehr acquisition was very solid, even if we did have to take Ales Kotalik back. Here's all you need to know about Regehr:

Christian Ehrhoff has the longest contract of any athlete in Buffalo sports history at 10 years and 40 million dollars. It's a wonderful job of circumventing the cap, but not really circumventing the cap. Very reasonable salary cap numbers. Should help the power play tremendously.

That brings us to Ville Leino. Gotta admit, 6 years and 27 mill for a guy who hasn't played center in a while is very risky, but a risk T-pegs and company needed to take. I never thought for a second Brad Richards was going to end up here, as nice a thought it was. They needed to get some one in here who can put the puck in the net, and Leino's that guy. I'll be interested to see what happens.

I feel like I'm forgetting something...Oh yeah...TIM CONNOLLY'S GONE!!! SEE YA! BYE! Good luck in Toronto.

That statement alone makes this a very good offseason for the Sabres.

Pegula Power?

Sorry, haven't blogged or tweeted for a while. Didn't miss anything, did I? Good!

Since the last time we spoke, your Buffalo Sabres are 5-1-2 since Terry Pegula officially took over the team. "Pegs" has been on the road with the team, including the team's first regulation loss Tuesday night in Pittsburgh. Even with the loss, everyone's absolutely excited about the playoff push.

So, why don't I see it the same way?

Don't get me wrong, I think the new owner is great. I'm just not sure the new owner is the reason for their improved play. I'm also not sure I saw the same games as my fellow Sabre bloggers and fellow Sabreland residents. I thought they were completely outclassed in both Carolina and Philadelphia, yet somehow managed to earn three out of 4 points. The Minnesota game was OK, but again they were humiliated Tuesday in the 'burg. The Penguins swept the Sabres this season 4-0-0. No shame in that, I suppose. Pittsburgh's a much better team than Buffalo.

Not sure everyone would agree with the above paragraph, and that's fine. That's what makes this little blue marble turn around the sun, ya know? I think everyone would agree that there IS shame in losing three of four to the Islanders. Am I right? How about being humiliated by the St. Louis Blues? The first Florida road trip of the season, specifically the 1st game at the Panthers? Am I supposed to just forget those games were ever played because we have a new owner?? Sorry, can't do that.

If it's not the new owner, then it must be the acquisition of Brad Boyes, right? I think the jury's still out on that one. No debate that Boyes has done well in his first few games as a Sabre. Call me at the end of the month.

So, what's the reason for the improved play? I don't know. More importantly, are they going to make the playoffs while being on this run? I still say no. I think Carolina's better than the Sabres. I still think the Rangers are better. The Devils are on fire, somebody put them out. 20-2-2.

Again, not sure everyone would agree with the above paragraph, and that's fine. I think everyone would agree that the real reason they'll be golfing in April this year? The power play. It's been horrid. Has been horrid. Horrid with Boyes. Horrid without Boyes. Need to score on the PP once or twice to make me feel better about them. Is it asking too much for one power play goal.

Mr. Pegula Goes To Washington (Street)

Listened to the Buffalo News interview with Terry Pegula and Ted Black. Very insightful interview. If you haven't listened to it, click here. It's worth it!

Can I say this. Ted Black.. I LOVE YOU!!! OK, that's a bit much, but I don't think I'm overrating him when I say that he's very likely to be the more significant piece of this puzzle. I'm a big fan of those super slo-mo replays. Really was happy to hear he would like to incorporate those into Sabre broadcasts. I think it would be a welcome addition. As long as we're on the subject, Mr. Black, by some chance you read this, I'm VERY MUCH AGAINST the music the Sabres use on their broadcasts. I. HATE. HURRICANE. 2000. Not real sure I can make that any more clear. If you could get rid of it, I'd be very grateful kthx.

On the topic of free agency, very happy to hear they "absolutely" will be involved. At the same time though, the question is will Darcy Regier be as interested. I'm just hopeful he makes a Raffi Torres type move this trading deadline. I'm not sure if he'll even do that, even with the no financial mandates. After all, talk is cheap. Also liked the fact that there will be more scouts and an increase in scouting budget. Gotta give Darcy credit here, liked that he made it clear he wanted more scouting.

Broke (kinda, sorta, not really) news that it was Tom Golisano who said to let Tallinder and Lydman walk.

Went at TBN for being negative towards players. Pegula said that TBN was partly to blame. Maybe, but you would have to admit at times they deserve it. The recent stretch of play before Wednesday's win over Atlanta was an example.

Overall, very revealing interview. Kudos to TBN for putting it up. Kudos to Pegula and Black for doing it.

Welcome To Pegulaville

Today was the day Sabre nation was waiting for, and boy, it didn't disappoint. Terry Pegula officially owns the Buffalo Sabres.

The most important part of the press conference was this: NO FINANCIAL MANDATES. The Sabres have no excuses. Specifically, Darcy Regier has no excuses. I am willing to give him some time to see what he can do with no financial handcuffs. However, if he's still conservative and shows that he still hesitates about trades, then he needs to be bought out at the end of the season. I worry that even though he has no financial mandates, he's still going to show those traits that we don't like. Frankly, I'd be surprised if we traded anyone or traded for anyone at the deadline. In his defense, he does have a great eye for talent, see Myers, Kassian, Miller, etc.

I'm not sure if there's anything more I can add that my Sabre blogging brethren haven't already said. I will add this, though. I wasn't in Tampa to feel the buzz that Jeff Vinik brought. I am here to feel the buzz of Terry Pegula. It is awesome!!!!!!

Random Thoughts

I'm not sure how I feel about the Pegula daughters having public Twitter accounts right now, granted they've had Twitter accounts long before their father's intentions to purchase the team went public. I know it's none of my business and I'm not their father, but maybe they should make their accounts private.

One one hand it could provide a window into the Sabres organ-I-zation. It seems to this blog that Tom Golisano and Larry Quinn, despite promoting their Facebook and Twitter accounts, aren't real big on social media. Their (Golisano and Quinn) views on bloggers are real clear.

Yet, I can see what's coming. My fellow blogging colleagues can see what's coming. We are dealing with TEENAGERS here. High schoolers. One of them called in to WGR on Saturday night. This won't end well. There are going to be a few "unscrupulous jerks", as Kate says, that will turn this into a humongous tirefire.

The NHL trade deadline is probably the best trade deadline of the four major sports. When you think about it, it's amazing how much we hockey fans get into it. We salivate over every little rumor, speculate on destinations and who gets moved. We order pizza, wings, soda, etc, and have super bowl like party for something that doesn't involve on-ice activity.

It's the type of thing that make non sports fans look at us and shake their heads.

The Golisano Press Conference

Sat on the couch, turned on YNN @ noon, grabbed my notebook to take notes pretending to be an actual reporter, and waited for business to pick up. Be honest, how many of you had news 4's Paul Peck as the one to ask about July 1, 2007?

Put your hands down!! Ain't no one saw that coming! Couple of points.

1) The major news I thought was LARRY QUINN'S LEAVING!!!! I'm so happy. You all know my thoughts about "the mighty Quinn". I've written about him so many times it made me ill. Yes, he came up with the winter classic and all that. He's also the one who dumped "Sabre dance" for that crappy "hurricane 2000". Before we go any further, Mr. Pegula, the first thing you need to do when you take charge is get rid of that crappy music. You're a Sabre fan, I can't believe you would be supportive of that awful screeching that makes an elementary school band sound like the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (Katebits will like that little plug, I'm sure!).
But I digress.

2) There's a list apparently that Golisano and Quinn made with Terry Pegula of certain players that won't be traded at the deadline. I found that interesting, but it probably doesn't matter since Pegula will likely be in charge before the deadline, and none of this will matter. Still, it's kind of fun to speculate as to who's on it. My two cents: It's probably Myers. Miller, Montador, and Kassian.

3) Golisano has no regrets and said the following to Schopp and the Bulldog on WGR today: "As I told the players today: what a gratifying thing to stand in a locker room and hand out all those President's Trophies to that team that had such a phenomenal record. To me, there's nothing more exciting, more gratifying." President's Trophies? What about the silver thing called the Stanley Cup?

There are other wonderful gems, like Quinn taking credit for the shoveling during TV timeouts, and Quinn leaving the Erie County waterfront project, but those three bullet points to me are the most important things from this day.

A New Vision And The Savior

The Tampa Bay Lightning revealed their new logo and uniforms for the 2011-2012 season today.

After letting it sink in for a moment, my first reaction is I LOVE IT!! No, check that, I FREAKING LOVE IT!!!

Yeah, I know. I'm a Lightning fan and I'm supposed to love everything about my team like some lifeless zombie, but the current logo and the numbers on the front is a joke. A world class organ-I-zation, as owner Jeff Vinik likes to say, deserves better than that. They got it right. Just like the Sabres got it right by going back to the original logo.

What I like the most about the new logo and uniforms is how simple it is. It's not flashy and sexy with all sorts of glitz and glamor. It's simple. A circle and a lightning bolt on a blue and white uniform. That's it! In that retrospect, it's sexy by not being sexy.

Another thing I like is the season ticket holders get a special jersey with a chip in the sleeve thing. It's something that frankly may be ahead of it's time. It's cutting edge! Really nice touch. We're now seeing the vision that Jeff Vinik wants to implement in Hockey Bay.

I'm not going to lie, this blog entry was supposed to be all about the Lightning and their new chapter. However as I write this, TSN's Darren Dreger tweets that Terry Pegula signed a purchase agreement and an announcement is forthcoming on Thursday. What vision does Pegula have for the Sabres? I don't know. I don't expect anything regarding Pegula's plans on Thursday. I'm sure he wants his own day.

We still have no idea who the hell he is. Yeah, he's a billionaire with his fragging business and donated $88 million to Penn State University for a new hockey facility, and that's all well and good, but what's HIS vision. We know Jeff Vinik's vision for the Lightning, and we're seeing it. What does Pegula think of the roster? The Arena? The horrendous TV contract? The equally horrendous TV broadcasts? Did he see what the Lightning did today and want to do something like that here?

The two teams I like are starting new eras. I love hockey!!

I Can't Play With You Anymore

I'm sorry. I can't do this anymore. I have joined Corey Griswold and moved on from this team. When Terry Pegula takes over, call me!!

I made some comments on Twitter about Jochen Hecht, or as I call him lately Joke-en, last night that cost me 5 followers. Jochen Hecht can't hit an empty net in practice, but can hit his coach? The fact that he's a number one or two center on this team and the fact that Larry Quinn believes he is one is EXACTLY what's wrong and why until Terry Pegula takes over, I don't care if they make the playoffs or not. I want them to, but I also know it'll be a cold day in hell when that happens. Even if they do, they will probably be swept right out.

You know what else? You can take your "you're a true fan" crap and shove it up your ass. I don't give a flying fuck. Just because I have no feelings for this management and the team they put out there does not mean I'm not a fan, and by the way, I'm not the only Sabres fan who feels that way. Furthermore, that "true fan" garbage means as much to me as saying we have the "greatest fans in the world". "Greatest fans in the world" is nothing more than an empty slogan that isn't worth the paper it's written on. I thought the Sabres had the "greatest fans in the world" until two hours later somebody from the Calgary Flames said that Flames fans are the "greatest fans in the world". Somebody's got it wrong, wouldn't you say? My guess is both!

I want them to win and be successful and not tank for a good draft pick, but I'm not going to say they're great when they're clearly not. This whole thing needs to be blown up. Hecht, Rivet, Stafford, Connolly, Sekera. They all need to go for a bag of pucks, a slice of pizza, ice girls, whatever you can get! Outside of Myers, Kassian, and the "world's greatest goalie" Ryan Miller, everyone else in the organ-I zation should be considered for trade, buy-out, outright release, whatever.

Let's review: Call me when Terry Pegula takes over. My no longer caring about their play does not make me any less of a fan. "Greatest fans in the world" is crap. Get rid of people not named Miller, Myers, or Kassian.

Let's start with Friday, shall we? I know Miami beach is great. It ain't that great where it causes the Sabres, a better team than Florida, to be humiliated for the full 60 minutes by a bunch of nobodys. Marty Reasoner? Really? Yeah, he's a serviceable player and all, but last night he might as well have been Wayne Gretzky. Lame! The world's best goalie, reigning Vezina trophy winner Ryan Miller, yanked after 20 minutes. See ya Ryan, enter Patrick La........

Wait just a second *checks Sabres roster to be sure Lalime's still a member of the team*

They lost to a crowd of about 16,000 people. 5 or 6 thousand Sabre fans, 5 or 6 Panther fans, and about 10,000 invisible silent people. Granted Sabre fans should be more concerned with going on at the library, errrrr, I mean HSBC Arena, than worrying about the number of Panther fans, but let's be honest. THERE ARE NO PANTHERS FANS!! The last time they had any fans was when they threw rats on the ice. Although somebody did on Friday, I repeat: THERE ARE NO PANTHERS FANS!!

Last night in Hockey Bay, USA!, it was a better first period for the Sabres, a draw. Although anything was better compared to the previous first period. After that, all Bolts, baby! The Bolts dominated the Sabres in the second period, out shooting them 18-5. Simon Gagne on the PP. 1-0 TB. Stammer (Steven Stamkos.You probably already knew that, but anyway) netted his 25th of the year, and the 99^th goal of his career. 2-0 Lightning. Then, Jason Pominville added a shorty, but MARTY ST. LOUIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSS with an empty netter. 3-1 Bolts. Sabres secure 0 points on the Florida trip. Zippo. None. Nil. Diddly Squat. Buh-bye.

It's amazing to think that Larry Quinn and company believe they are Stanley Cup contenders. Can't score against improving, but still below average goaltending. Did it seem to anyone else when Miller was pulled in the third for the extra skater, the Sabres showed no urgency to get the tying goal? You got the same "we got to finish our chances", "we got to GET some chances", "we need to be consistent and skate hard" crap after last night's that you've been getting for the last three years.

Let me get this straight. Get insanely good goaltending on the way to a very unlikely division title, get exposed by a better Bruins team, lose key parts on defense, bring in Leopold (solid addition), Morissonn (injured), and Rob Niedermayer, (who I expected more out of to be honest. Very disappointing) while failing to/not bothering to address your goal scoring problems, and somehow with a straight face and serious tone say you are Stanley Cup contenders, while saying, again somehow with a straight face and serious tone, you have 2 of the top 20 NHL centers. GET THE FUCK OUT!! You won't even make the playoffs.

Boy, talk about putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with Tupelo, Mississippi. You wonder if the common horse is smarter than Larry Quinn....

So, Anything Happen In Sabreland Lately?

It's been about 24 hours since word got out that Terry Pegula is interested in buying the Buffalo Sabres. Sabres fans have wondered when will Tom Golisano would sell the team. Tommy G. left the 716 for the sunny shores of FLA to escape the heavy taxes here, and seems less and less interested in the Sabres. The now late Jim Kelley speculated Tommy G. was always open to selling the team, yet Golisano never admitted it.

We've all criticized Golisano for not being around in recent years, but this needs to be said. He kept the team here, and that's what he should be known for. Not being an absentee owner.

Now, this is all very exciting, and rightfully so, but please forgive this writer as I'm about to put a wet blanket over this raging fire. Two things to keep in mind. 1) These things always have the possibility of falling through or it's revealed that there's no interest or something else of the like. Not likely to happen, but worth pointing out.

2) Does anyone know how Larry Quinn fits into all this? I'm no fan of "the mighty" Quinn. He's in charge of a waterfront project that will never see the light of day. He's clearly the one in charge of player personnel. Of the 132 teams in the big 4 sports leagues, he signed what might be the worst TV contract (and subsequent 10 YEAR EXTENSION) of them all with MSG, the Knicks, Rangers and Devils channel. The TV broadcasts are presumably under his control, and they look like it. I'll be very interested to see what role Larry Quinn has (or hopefully, doesn't have) when Pegula takes over.

Did anyone else actually read Ken Campbell's blog post from The Hockey News? The whole thing? Well, y'all might want to read it again. Especially the 7th paragraph from the top The following is the paragraph in question. The part that's in bold, underlined font is the most important part:

"Golisano has sold a small part of his interest in the team to managing partner Larry Quinn and chief operating officer Dan DiPofi and the source said Pegula will likely pick up their portions of the team as well. However, there’s a good chance both Quinn and DiPofi will remain in their current positions with the organization. Should the three sell for a total of about $150 million, they would all stand to make a very handsome profit on the deal."

As far as Darcy Regier and Lindy Ruff are concerned, I'm not sure yet. For me, it ties into if Quinn stays around. If that's the case, don't expect anything to change. Same for the players. So while it's good that Pegula's a Sabres fan and a former season ticket holder with deep pockets, what he thinks of Larry Quinn is just as, if not more important than how much money he has.

The sale is expected to happen by Christmas. Let's hope we don't have to make a return after the holidays

The Captain's Going Down With The Ship

0 goals, 1 assist, -6, 10 penalty minutes in 14 games. A healthy scratch for lord knows how many games. Know who's stats those are? Mike Weber? Nope. Connolly? Wrong again!

Those tire fire numbers belong to captain Craig Rivet.

I found a way to watch the TSN version of Sabres/Leafs from Friday night, and Gord Miller and Pierre McGuire were discussing Rivet. Pierre said the Sabres should trade Rivet. I agree. If you're going to bench your captain, at some point logic says you will have to remove the "C" from his sweater, so why keep him around? It isn't an uncommon thing. After all, it happened to some guy named Lindy and ......

I'm sure Craig contributes a lot to the locker room, and provides leadership to a group that sorely lacks a leader, but it's extremely difficult to do so from the press box. Last night, the Sabres could have benefited from their captain, but one look at the box score finds #52 was a healthy scratch for the umpteenth time this year. I've lost count, OK! Sue me. The point is unless he's hurt or about to be traded, the captain should be on the ice instead of scarfing down press box food.

I don't know who should be the captain. I guarantee he ain't on the roster right now. That's bad for business. I don't if Lindy knows. That's doubly bad for business. Larry and Darcy.. Well, you get the point.

In Edmonton. In a place where hockey is a religion. Cheerleaders. The fans in oil country are less than pleased.

Over the last few years, Ice girls, cheerleaders, cheer squads, whatever you want to call them, have become en vogue. No doubt thanks to the Carolina Hurricanes and their Storm Squad. Around since the club's move to the RBC Center in 1999, the popularity of the group took off in 2002, when they were prominently featured during the Canes Stanley Cup Playoff run.

Even the Tampa Bay Lightning, the team I grew up with since their inception in 1992, have ice girls. Well after I left Florida, for the record.

It's definitely a hot topic for hockey fans. Many around here, and our Canadian brethren, don't think ice girls and cheerleaders belong at hockey games. To the traditionalists, ice girls are a gimmick designed by "non - traditional" markets to bring in fans. In the case of the Panthers and Thrashers, it clearly isn't working, and I'm not sure naked girls on the ice would boost attendance.

I'm really surprised the Oilers are making this move. I guess young guys like Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle aren't enough in the city of champions.

My general opinion on the subject as it relates to the Sabres is if the Canadian teams start doing it, then the Sabres should follow suit. Let's see how it plays out in Edmonton first. As far as my personal opinion? I don't care one way or another. If the Sabres decide tomorrow to hold auditions for ice girls, god bless them. If not, cool. I don't go to games to see scantily clad women dance. I go to games to see the games. Sabres, Bisons, Bandits, two people playing tiddlywinks. Take your pick.

Chapter 2 (AKA My 5 Year Anniversary Post)

Five years ago, I set out on an adventure. The goal was to create a place where I could share my thoughts about stuff. Sports, primarily, but I was willing to talk about other stuff, too. 5 years, 170 posts, and two hosting platforms later, this blog turns 5 years old.

Look! I even found a happy birthday photo for the occasion!!

And now, for the 3 or 4 of you waiting, the long anticipated E! True Hollywood Story style behind the scenes look at this blog!!!

I started this blog five years ago by signing up for AOL journals (go ahead and laugh) on a Tuesday night. The reason why I started a blog was because I was heading to Florida State the next weekend to see the Noles play Maryland during homecoming, and I thought now would be a good time to start a blog. That and the fact Twitter wasn't invented yet.

The first year of this blog sucked in comparison to now. I've learned how to write by maintaining this blog. The posts here these days, I'd like to think, have better sentence structure, have better grammar, and more sophisticated language. Especially when it comes to my "special commentaries". I'll be completely honest, I never intended to write these long winded diatribes. It was the result of watching Keith Olbermann's show on MSNBC and saw him deliver one of his special comments. I thought that sports needed one of those types of things, so the "special commentary" was born. The main difference is mine are truly special, like once every 9 months to a year type thing, unlike Olbermann's once every week thing.

Having said that, my choice for the first one was extremely stupid. I think that one stems from my southern upbringing.

Two years ago, I moved over to blogger after AOL journals shut down. I've really enjoyed it. I can finally customize this blog the way I like. Which, if you're a regular visitor, seems to be every other week (I'm sorry. I promise I'll find something I'll like.).

Over the last five years, this blog and I have seen the Sabres make two deep playoff runs, attend the aforementioned FSU game, attend the winter classic @ the Ralph, attend a Blue Jays game, see the Yankees win the World series, see the UB bulls win a MAC title and go to a bowl game, experience the saga that is Terrell Owens and the T.O. show, and see the Bandits win the NLL championship.

WOW! I never thought this blog would make it this far, much less see and experience all the things it has.

I’ll close this out by saying one thing: thank you! Thanks for giving this blog a chance. Whether you read it once or come back every day waiting with baited breath to see if I've updated this little space of the Internet, I really appreciate you stopping by. Thanks for linking this blog on the blogrolls of the many wonderful Buffalo sports blogs out there (And if for some god forsaken reason it isn't, you might wanna go ahead and fix that. Hell, I'll even throw in a ;-) even though emoticons aren't my thing). The Internet is a big, scary place, but I'm glad I did this. Yeah, seeing what you wrote a week ago on Die By The Blade, and the subsequent comments to it is weird, but still totally worth it. After all, those are experiences you can’t get anywhere else. It’s truly humbling to know that there are people out there who care about what I have to say about anything.

Here's to five years, and maybe more!

I'd Rather Have No TV, Part 2

I know I've harped on this before, and I'm very sorry that I'm about to bring it up again, but I'm gonna. My main beef this time around is the "Hurricane 2000" crap they play on the TV and radio broadcasts.

First off, they insist, INSIST, on using "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions. I'm sorry, I should say they got a orchestra or a high school band or whatever to play "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions (you know, helps keep costs low! *thumbs up*). I hate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it. I FUCKING HATE IT. I can't record the games on the DVR anymore because of that. I can't listen to WGR radio without hearing it every 30 fucking seconds. I used to like that song. I don't now. Thanks Sabres for ruining that song for me forever!

The Sabres / Leafs preseason game was last night. I avoided WGR yesterday because I hate that song. I went out of my way to find the LEAFS TV HD feed on the Internet. I love the LEAFS TV production. The intro with the ominous music and shots of the outside of the arena and the players coming on the ice is really well done. Why can't the Sabres do that?? Why do they insist on a piss poor ripoff of a song I used to like. Fuck Hurricane 2000, fuck the TV and radio broadcasts for constantly using it. Fuck all of that! I hate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it. I FUCKING HATE IT!!! I can't be the only one who hates it!

Can somebody from the Sabres TV department tell me why they like that albatross of a song?? It doesn't even fit the team. Rock you like a hurricane should be the theme song for the Carolina Hurricanes. You know, the team named HURRICANES. The Sabres have NO FUCKING BUSINESS using that song. NONE WHAT SO EVER!

Once again, Thanks Sabres! Thanks a bunch for ruining that song for me forever! I won't record the games on the DVR , or listen to WGR radio until you dump that shit. Knowing how long it took you to get all your games in HD, sadly I have a feeling I'll be waiting a very long time.

2010 Picks Contest - Week 2

2010 Sabres Preview

Training camp and the preseason are around the corner. Puckdrop 2010 is next weekend where Sabres fans will buy new jerseys that will look something like this, instead of something like this

It will also be the first chance to see the 2010-2011 Buffalo Sabres. Gone are Henrik Tallinder and Toni Lydman. In are Jordan Leopold, Steve Montador, Rob Niedermayer, and the oft-misspelled Shaone Morrisonn.

Or as "Paul Gaustad" tweeted: "The Buffalo Sabres are reusing most of your favorite players from last year to conserve your expectations for 2010-11" (spoiler: I don't believe that's actually Paul Gaustad).

I don't know whether I should laugh at that because it's funny, or cry because it's true.

Up front, I have nothing positive to say about the following: Tim Connolly, Jason Pominville, Derek Roy, Drew Stafford. AKA 2/3 of the team's top six forwards on the team. I don't care what Darcy Regier says, Connolly and Roy ARE NOT two of the top 20 centers in the NHL. Stafford's way too inconsistent and doesn't use his size. I don't know what I'll see out of Pominville from shift ot shift, much less game to game. I really thought moving one or two guys was what this team needed. Tyler Ennis looks like a keeper, we shall see how he handles an 82 game schedule. Thomas Vanek gets a lot of grief because he's a seven million dollar player, yet he has the most goals of any Sabre in the past five years. I don't see the other "top forwards" doing that.

I love the Rob Niedermayer signing. Love, love ,love, love it. He'll provide grit and leadership to a team the desperately needs it (and a Stanley cup ring. Can't have too many of those). Patrick Kaleta can't stay healthy, which is too bad, because he brings toughness, again something BUF desperatly lacks. Same with Cody McCormick, Mike Grier, and the aforementioned Paul Gaustad. Matt Ellis and Jochen Hecht are nice players. Nathan Gerbe's a nice kid, but I haven't been impressed.

On defense, Tyler Myers is.... who's kidding who, he won the Calder trophy, NEXT. Steve Montador: Shows up and gives an honest effort. Captain Craig Rivet will start healthy, and I believe his inability to stay healthy is why some believe he should be stripped of his captaincy. I still think there's some milage left in those tires. Like Niedermayer, Shaone Morrisonn should provide grit and toughness. Goals? uh.....Jordan Leopold. That's where the goals will come from (hopefully). I like Chris Butler. Had a down year. I expect big things from him this year. Andrej Sekera does nothing for me.

The Sabres have Ryan Miller in goal. Patrick Lalime is the backup.

Expectations? As funny as that is, I'm afraid that tweet from "Paul Gaustad" seems apropos. I see the Sabres finishing 2nd in the division, the 8th seed in the conference, and out in the first round again.

Professional Football Withdrawal

This is my only scheduled (NFL) football post of the season. Y'all better enjoy this.

I didn't watch the Bills game Friday, since I was at the Erie County Fair, but I had my phone with me, so I knew the score and some of the details. Did catch some "highlights" later. Glad I didn't watch it.

Trent Edwards threw a horrible interception and only got the Bills first team offense a field goal. I know people like to wonder how many QB's are better than Trent. I think the better question is this: Name me a QB that isn't better than Trent? THERE ARE HIGH SCHOOL QUARTERBACKS THAT ARE BETTER THAN HIM. As bad as his on-field play was, his postgame press conference was worse. I thought Dick Jauron was fired. Edwards said the things Jauron would have said if he were still coach. Proof he hasn't got an original thought in his head. Said he has to look at the film.

Query for all the QB's who read this: How many times does a QB need to watch tape to realize how poor he's playing. Subsidiary query: If he's studied the tape of himself, and still looks the same, then what in god's name is he doing in the film room?

Need to look at the film? That's funny! Like putting a Wegmans on the Buffalo waterfront funny.

Everyone said the only way the Bills will improve is by getting the 1st overall pick and drafting a franchise QB. You can't complain about these types of performances if you want the first pick in the draft.

Like I said earlier, This is my only scheduled NFL post of the season and y'all better enjoy this. I'm not a Bills fan; I only blog about them cause they are around here (for now); my team is the Tampa Bay Bucs, and they're going to be just as bad this year. So, I'm taking a pro football sabbatical this year. I'll save my football talk for my Florida State Seminoles and new coach Jimbo Fisher.

Everything Larry Quinn Touches Dies

South Buffalo's Tim Kennedy went to salary arbitration with his hometown Sabres and got his 1 million dollar contract bought out by the club today.

Lesson: never go to arbitration if you want to remain a Buffalo Sabre (see Briere, Daniel and Dumont, J.P.)

What I don't get about all of this is Kennedy was scheduled to make ONE MILLION DOLLARS. Are the Sabres that bad off financially where a million bucks is too much for a player, or is it a million bucks is too rich for that type of player. I'd like to think it's the latter, but I'm not sure. Especially when Darcy Regier said today the club was over their self imposed budget. Another thing I don't get is why couldn't you have both Kennedy and new Sabre d-man Shaone Morrisonn. I think I finally understand what's going on at One Seymour H. Knox III Plaza.

Darcy deserves blame for his trade deadline failures (Torres, Bernier come to mind), as well as his constant lack of understanding the marketplace. Yet, he's not the one who sets the budget. Tom Golisano's living in the FLA, so who knows how much attention he's giving the Sabres. Yet, it's his team, and he must decide what the budget is. Lawrence Quinn's here every day, knows what's going on with the on and off ice product, and must clearly have some say in the yearly budget.

Based on the above, I must draw two conclusions. 1) Larry Quinn is fully responsible for this shit. 2) The Sabres PRIMARY goal is to make money. The Stanley Cup is a SECONDARY goal.

These two quotes from Regier today say it all: "Ownership has been terrific" and "Best possible team with the resources we have".

No, Ownership hasn't "been terrific", and this isn't the"Best possible team with the resources we have". To put it bluntly, Larry Quinn is a god damn failure. The Sabres went to the Eastern finals two straight years after the lockout. They haven't recovered since the 06-07 off season disaster. The Canalside people (of which Quinn is a big part of) courted Bass Pro for 10 years, only to have Bass Pro say no. Canalside will never come to fruition. The waterfront will remain as it is now. Destitute.

Everything Larry Quinn touches dies. It's time for Larry Quinn to go.

Defending Blogging

I hate to break this to the Buffalo Sabres, but we bloggers are real people too.

I'm not a fan of what the Sabres have done on the ice in recent years, nor am I very fond of their roster decisions. I am just as unhappy about their off-ice decisions. You all know how I feel about their TV presentation. Today's installment of "off ice things I don't particularly care for" has to do with the Sabres, and to an extent, the sports world's view of bloggers (although I personally prefer the term "citizen journalist").

This whole blog post was inspired by a conversation on Twitter between Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News and my fellow blogging colleagues Phil from Black and Blue and Gold, Amanda from Two Minutes for Roughing, and Heather B. from Top Shelf. This is a subject I've wanted to discuss for a while, so a perfect time to discuss it.

I understand why many sports teams and leagues don't allow bloggers into the press box. Yet, the times are changing. Magazines are folding left and right. Newspapers, like the aforementioned Buffalo News are losing readers. People are going to the internet for coverage of their favorite teams. In the case of the Sabres, they go because their TV "partner" doesn't do anything for them or the Sabres TV people don't. The only coverage is from the 4 TV news channels or WGR or WECK on radio. I would think the Sabres organization would be happy to have more people talk about them.

I know the Islanders have a blogger's row press box type setup, as do the Canes, Thrashers and Predators. I don't see why the Sabres can't do that, or the Bisons and Bandits. They should have one too.

As much as old school media people and the Sabres organ-I-zation believe, we bloggers aren't fat mouth breathers who lack knowledge. Not all of us are immature message board posters. We don't leave idiotic, vulgar, homophobic comments on the WGR website. What we are in the Sabre blogosphere are people who use our blogs and twitter pages to have intelligent, rational, humorous and thought provoking conversations. We all can't have a cushy job at whatever newspaper happens to still be around, nor have a cushy radio job at 'GR or WECK. We have our blogs and we believe we're a good job of covering our teams.

Doesn't that count for something??

Free Agency Flopalooza

It's the eve of NHL free agency. Fun times for all. Uh....hang on just a second... Oh, I'm sorry, fun times for everyone that isn't a Buffalo Sabres fan.

Darcy Regier, and to an extent, Larry Quinn say they've learned from the past. They will try to make changes. Fine. On Friday, though, Regier told WGR that they have "two of the top twenty centers in the NHL". A direct reference to Tim Connolly and Derek Roy. WOW! How arrogant can you get, but that's another blog for another day. After the first round of the draft, Regier said some trash, which you can read here, about not giving up first round picks. They say they want to get bigger. Then you see an article with a title like this: "Sabres still believe in speed".

These were the 2009 - 2010 forward lines:

Vanek - Connolly - Kennedy
Ennis - Roy - Pominville
Stafford - Hecht - Grier
Mair - Gaustad - Kaleta

Based on the statements above, I guarantee these will be the 2010-2011 lines:

Vanek - Connolly - Kennedy
Ennis - Roy - Pominville
Stafford - Hecht - Grier
Mair - Gaustad - Kaleta

These were the 2009-2010 Defensive pairings:

Tallinder - Myers
Lydman - Montador
Rivet - Butler

Again, based on the statements above, I guarantee these will be the 2010-2011 defensive pairings:

Sekera - Myers
Weber- Montador
Rivet - Butler

Miller and Lalime were the goalies last year. Since Millsie spoke wonderfully of him at the awards ceremony, these will be the goalies next year.

I'll be honest, the Montador and Grier signings surprised me. I didn't believe they would sign anybody last year. I don't see any trades or signings occurring this year, and if they do, I'll eat a hat*!!!

Expanding Boundaries

And the dominoes start tumbling....

Nebraska announced they would leave the Big XII conference to join the Big 10. Colorado today announced they were bolting the Big XII for the Pac-10. Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State all seem to be Pac-10 bound.

One thing's clear: The Big XII is dead. Nebraska's going. Colorado's gone. It seems Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State are on their way out. That leaves Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor, and Texas A&M. They could always try to form their own conference. A "big 6", if you will.

It's too bad a conference with such history and tradition is falling apart. A history that goes back to the days of the Big Eight conference (ask your parents what that is). If the big 12 can't survive, then what chance does the Big East or the MAC or any other second or third tier conference have. If you can't latch on to the Big 10 (or whatever it will be called), the Pac-10 (or big west or pac-16 or whatever), the SEC or ACC, too bad.

Speaking of the SEC and ACC, I haven't heard more about what this will do to those conferences. I can't imagine Mike Slive will let them do this without some response. Not that I think it will happen, but I could see a scenario in which all this expansion occurs, Slive calls an impromptu press conference and announces Florida State, Miami, Baylor and Virginia Tech are joining the SEC, thus forcing the ACC to raid the Big East, causing the Big East to fall apart.

Whatever happens, June 9, 2010 is a monumental day in the landscape of college sports. I can't wait to see what happens next!

"My vision of being world class here necessitated taking this action and really having a fresh start on the hockey side of things."

That was what Tampa Bay Lightning owner Jeff Vinik told the Tampa Tribune right after he fired GM Brian Lawton and coach Rick Tocchet.

World class. When I read that, those words jumped out to me. World class. Bringing the Lightning back to respectability.

Enter Steve Yzerman, the utter definition of world class. 22 years as a Detroit Red Wing, captain for 19 of those 22 years. Won three Stanley Cups. Moved into the front office in the Motor city, spent four years as VP of hockey operations. Watched GM Ken Holland and company do their thing. I'm pretty sure he took notes on how to do things. Won the Stanley Cup in 2008 while learning from Holland. Put together the Canadian Olympic team that won gold on home ice. Enshrined forever in the hockey hall of fame.

Talk about a fresh start. Many snickered when Vinik said what he said about world class. Make no mistake, Jeff Vinik isn't kidding. He's building his vision of world class before our very eyes.

The next step is to bring a head coach, then turn attention to the draft, where the Lightning hold the sixth pick. Then July 1 and free agency. Then there's what to do with Vinny Lecavalier and his contract, which no matter how much we want to not talk about, we have to talk about it.

I have to be honest, I didn't expect Stevie Y to take the job. His heart was set on being GM in Detroit, but that wasn't realistic. Kenny Holland's not leaving, neither is assistant GM Jim Nill. To realize his dream, he would have to leave the winged wheel nest.

I think this is a perfect move. He's a winner, first and foremost. Captain of the Wings for nearly 20 years, 4 Stanley cups. Led Canada to gold in Vancouver. He learned from the best front office in the NHL. Not a very good front office, but THE BEST front office.

When Vinik arrived in Hockey Bay, he stressed stability. Stevie Y brings stability, and instant respectability to a franchise in desperate need of both.

Hear that? That's the sound of "playoff beards" being shaved around WNY. That's because the 2009-2010 Sabres season is over in 6 games at the hands of the Boston Bruins.

I'm not surprised the Sabres are gone in the 1st round, although I must say I had the Sabres advancing in 6 games, it was a very even-matched series that could have gone either way. This wasn't a Sabres team that scared anybody, let's be honest. No one expected them to do any damage in the playoffs anyway.

The power play was everything but powerful. 0-16. Not sure if you caught that, so let me adjust the font size. THE SABRES POWER PLAY WENT 0-16. As bad as the PP was, the penalty kill, 2nd in the league in the regular season, was atrocious. Shorthanded 22 times, this squad let the B's score 6 pp goals. 72.7%. Pitiful. Maybe the injury to Jochen Hecht had something to do with it, but that's an excuse.

I know I'll probably catch hell for this, but I'll say it anyway. Tuukka Rask was better than likely Vezina trophy winner Ryan Miller. Not by a lot, but at the end of the day, he was better. Look at his regular season stats.

Tuukka Rask:

2.18 goals against
.927 save percentage

Ryan Miller:

2.34 goals against
.926 save percentage

Rask's going on to round two, Miller's breaking out the 2-iron.

How do we define the 2009-2010 Sabres? They weren't liked by a lot of people. There wasn't a lot of emotional attachment to this group. Yet, they won the Northeast division in a year that most people thought the Sabs were a 7th or 8th seed, or not a playoff team. My belief is that this group vastly overachieved. Ryan Miller carried this team to an improbable division title. 95% of the parts from the two non-playoff years are still here. Tyler Myers, Mike Grier, and Miller are the reason the Sabres finished where they finished.

I'd love to sit here and tell you new blood will come in here and players that have been here way too long (Roy, Connolly) will be traded, but we both know that's not going to happen. It'll be the same exact group here next year. I guarantee it! It took them at least 5 years to dump Kotalik and Afinogenov. We'll see July 1, I could be proven wrong. I doubt it very much, but then again, I said that about T.O.

My only hope for 2010-2011 is the Sabres will dump that "hurricane 2000" crap and improve their TV broadcast.

The 1st Buddy Nix draft is in the books. How did he do? Let's find out.

1st pick - 9th overall: C.J. Spiller - RB - Clemson: WOW! Actually, I'm not surprised by this pick. Buddy was looking for an impact player, and there's no doubt that Spiller fits the bill. However, the Bills needed help at QB, OT, LB, NT. They could also use another wide receiver, but they didn't completely F it up like Jacksonville did. I heard Colin Cowherd say "he's like Reggie Bush, but better between the tackles". If he is, and he returns the first kickoff of the season for a TD, or breaks a 75 yd run on the 1st play of the season, few, if anyone will complain. Not a total miss, but not a slam dunk either. BTW, big props to Joe Buscaglia (fellow FSU fan) of GR for being the first to ride the Spiller train. GRADE: B

2nd pick - 41st overall: Torrell Troup - NT - Central Florida: It's a nose tackle, which the Bills need, but Troup? The Bills must feel that Troup's their guy and that's why they passed on Terrence Cody of Alabama. 108 tackles, 24 for a loss and 6 sacks in his four years at UCF. It fills a need, but meh. Like the position chosen, don't like the pick. I would have taken Cody here. GRADE: C+

3rd pick - 72nd overall: Alex Carrington - DE -Arkansas State: Very curious pick to say the least. It's pretty clear that Buddy Nix is going to be hard to figure out. I don't agree with this pick, but you can make an argument that the Bills need help at every position. Talk is he could be a 3-4 outside linebacker, but COLT MCCOY was still on the board and the Bills need a QB. This pick tells me the Bills believe their QB is on the roster right now. GRADE: D+

4th pick - 107th overall: Marcus Easley - WR - Connecticut: Ummmmm...........Uhhhhhh.......???? Don't watch UCONN football. I got nothing, honestly. No o-line help. They do need a WR, but they have no QB to get the ball to. GRADE: D

5th pick - 140th overall: Ed Wang - OT - Virgina Tech: We're going to be adults here. No stupid wang jokes, this is a respected blog (I hope). Instead, here's a fun fact: He's the 1st Chinese-American player drafted. It's a need. Depth on the O-line. Apparently not aggressive. Joe Buscaglia says he didn't do well at the Senior Bowl. GRADE: C

6th pick - 178th overall: Arthur Moats - LB - James Madison: I didn't know James Madison had a football program. How the fuck am I supposed to give a grade, here? Seriously! What the hell's going on 'round here? I put LB b/c Joe B. says he probably will be a LB in the 3-4. Good enough for me. GRADE: D (as in Don't know diddly squat about him and it's not a QB and..we're moving on)

7th pick - 192nd overall: Danny Batten - DE/OLB - South Dakota State: Another DE/OLB 3-4 defensive type guy, thing. GRADE:D-

8th pick - 209th overall: Levi Brown - QB - Troy: At long last, our national nightmare is over. THE BILLS HAVE A QB. DSAGAJKHGUJSOIUJOPSHUJK. OK, that's a huge over-reaction.6'3" 229 lbs. Sun belt player of the year with 23 TD's 9 INT's. Didn't watch Troy football. Not sure if he was the QB when Troy came to FSU and nearly upset my Noles. Don't believe so, but who cares. FSU won that game, and the Bills have a QB. Will he be the guy? Who knows, but they needed a QB and they got one. Like it. GRADE: B+

9th pick - 216th overall: Kyle Calloway - OT - Iowa: Needed O-line help, and got it. GRADE: B

One quick postscript about these "grades": Believe it or not, I'm not an expert. These grades are my opinion. Will Easley or Moats be great? Maybe. Could Spiller be the biggest bust in the history of busts? Maybe. That's the thing: WE. DON'T. KNOW.

A Feast Of Buffalo

Another loss to the Sens, 5 in a row, 9 straight including last season, 25-6-4 since 2005-2006. A goal and assist each from Sabre-killers Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson.

Like Pedro Martinez says, tip my hat and call them my daddy. Seriously though, this gives me an idea.

We all know the Patriots dominance over the Bills. Whether it's Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, or Matt Cassel at QB, the Pats still humiliate the Bills. Likewise, with or without Chris Drury, Daniel Briere, and any other ex-Sabre you want to name, the Sabs still struggle to beat Ottawa.

I pose this question: Who owns Buffalo more? The Pats or Spezza/Alfredsson? Vote in the poll.

No Love

I've had a hard time coming up with something to write about. So I did what I usually do when something like this occurs. Scan around my "blogs that don't suck" list for some inspiration. Sure enough, I found a topic.

For a team that is third in the Eastern Conference, and has arguably the world's best goaltender, the 2009-2010 edition of the Buffalo Sabres are an extremely unlikable group. Fans have problems with certain players (I.E. Roy, Vanek), the Arena is extremely quiet, even when the Sabres are winning, and many are declaring Raffi Torres as another Dominic Moore or Bob Corkum. Yet, they enter tonight with a five point advantage on Ottawa with 3 games. Tonight's opponent, the Canadiens, are even farther behind the Sabs. Provided they don't go into another funk (and beat Ottawa for once), they should raise a division championship banner to the rafters of HSBC Arena next season.

And yet, that may be a reason why people are nervous. I sense some anger and nervousness in the fan base. They aren't sure what to think, so they sit on their hands. They saw the west coast trip as cause for concern. They've gone 9-11-4 in their last 24 games. 9-15 in their last 24 would give anyone reason to panic.

I understand why people are nervous, but I say embrace this team. Yeah, some people on this team I could do without (I.E. Roy, Pominville). Yeah, Torres hasn't been good since he came over from Columbus, but maybe it's his hand/wrist injury that's to blame.

This may be the least popular third place team I've ever seen. They are about as unpopular as Trent Edwards.

Do I think the Sabres are a Stanley Cup contender? God, no! The point is they are leading their division and are third in the East. That should count for something.

Let Me Get My Crying Towel

The Bills signed somebody!! Yeah!!! All right!!! Ah-mazing!!! Woo-hoo!!! High-five!!! Who? Ah, damn. Cornell Green? I hate this team. I quit this team. I ain't never buying tickets again. Who the fuck is this guy anyway?

That's probably the reaction of many Bills fans after hearing about the first free-agent signing by Buddy Nix and the Buffalo Bills this offseason. I gotta say, they're probably not wrong either. Cornell Green inks a 3 year, $9 million deal. Green is a 10 year veteran who recently played for Al Davis' Oakland Raiders. Green also had stops in Denver, New York (Jets, that is), and in Tampa with my Bucs. With the retirement of Brad Butler, the Bills needed depth. They also apparently needed to find players who hit the mother of their children.

It's not hard to figure out why the Bills haven't been good for a decade plus. They haven't had a QB since Jim Kelly, they've hired sucky coaches, they've had sucky front offices bring in sucky players. They have an owner who grows more out of touch with what's going every day. You wonder if Chan Gailey and Buddy Nix can get it right. Then you see something like this and it makes you wanna puke. In fact, they should probably change the words to the Bills shout song.

You get the idea.

If that didn't make you want to hurl, maybe this will. Tim Tebow's gonna work out for the Bills. As a Florida State fan, I saw more than enough of Timmy Terrific. I don't wanna go to St. John Fisher College in July and see him with the Bills (nor do I want to see him with the Bucs, but that's another story). He has to change the way he throws the ball, he's gonna be a project, he's probably not gonna be an starting QB in the NFL. I don't why some Bills fans think he's gonna be the savior of this franchise.

Hang on, let me get my crying towel. This is what some of you Bills fans are like: *starts crying* "I want Tim Tebow. He's such a great guy, and will save the Bills, and he's a religious guy, and he taught kids in Guatemala to read, and if they don't draft him, I'll root for whoever does.

Let me tell you something, Bills fans. If you want a QB, go get Jake Delhomme, go get Jon Kitna, go get Jim Sorgi, draft Colt McCoy, draft Sam Bradford, drat Dan LeFevore. Stay away from Tim Tebow.

Ryan's Hope

Yeah, I could have chosen "Miller Time" or "Killer Miller" as the title, but everyone else is using those. I'm not everyone else.

Ryan Miller and team USA shutout the Swiss, 2-0 at Canada Hockey Place to move into the semis at the Olympics. Jonas Hiller was great, but Millsy was just a little bit better today.

The US appeared to score at the end of the second, but it was determined that time ran out before the puck crossed the line. I thought for sure that would be a spirit crusher, but the US came out in the 3rd and got a big goal from Zach Parise, Miller shut the door and Parise's empty netter sent the Swiss back home to Switzerland.

Canada just clobbered the Russians, so it appears that if the US gets past the Czech Republic or Finland (probably the Czechs, if you ask me. You didn't, but anyway), then they'll have to meet Canada again for the gold. Miller stood on his head the first time around vs the host nation. He'll have to do it again and then some if the US wants the gold. Canada's angry. They smacked the Russians around like they stole their lunch money. They want the US again, badly.

It's a game I'd like to see again too. The game this past Sunday was tremendous. It got ESPN to talk about, it got Skip Bayless and Colin Cowherd, two people who despise the sport, to mention it. Granted, they wouldn't have mentioned it if the US lost, but still. It's not gonna get the rest of 'merica to watch the sport, but who cares.

A Whole New World

March 3rd. 3 pm Eastern. For most, it'll just be another typical Wednesday afternoon.

For hockey general managers and fans, it's the most anticipated 3 o'clock ever. It's the last chance to make transactions. Get that coveted player that's gonna push you over the top. Acquire that draft pick to build for the future. Watch other teams make moves and improve their standing while your favorite team stands idle and does nothing. Outside of free agency July 1, this day is circled on many fans calenders. It's hell for players and GM's, but sheer nirvana for the paying public.

All sorts of excitement and disappointment. Not one thing on trade deadline day will involve any actual hockey plays, yet the reaction at 3:46 pm for many will be comparable to an OT goal in game 7 to of the Stanley Cup Finals. Seems kind of silly to people who don't follow sports. When you step back and think about it for a minute, it is silly. Yet, once you're in the moment and you get involved in it, it doesn't seem silly.

This figures to be the most anticipated trade deadline day in many years. Basically, if you're not Edmonton, Toronto, Carolina or Columbus, you have a realistic chance of making the playoffs. Lots of buyers or potential buyers, very few sellers. I think this year's trade deadline will be the most interesting ever, not just because of whose available and what teams are interested, but how we the fans find out who's going where.

I've been wanting to write this for a while, and the trade deadline gives me a good excuse to write this. Great timing, eh? Anyway, before 2010, if you wanted to find out about trades, you went to TSN or NHL network or the Internet. Now, we have Twitter. Granted, Twitter's been around since 2006, but it hasn't been the main source of news until now, Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie are using it, which shows how effective a tool Twitter has become.

Lots of hockey writers and insiders are on Twitter, and odds are when Ray Whitney's traded on or before March 3, we're going to find out on Twitter first. Now, it isn't a foolproof system by any stretch. Things could be posted that are completely false without using common sense or not checking sources. You know, like some mystery dude at a certain hockey website that will not be named or linked to. Sorry, but the day Marty Turco goes to the Sabres is the day I'll eat a hat.

For the record, I have a Twitter account, and before I signed up, I admit I thought Twitter was stupid. I've been using it since May, and I can say that my opinion of it has changed 175%. It is a wonderful tool to get information. Breaking news, where your friends are, what I'm eating for breakfast, whatever.

It's also helpful when you want to find out when your favorite blogger updates his blog next!

I Drank The Kool-Aid, And I Hate Myself

Stop me if you've heard this one before. The Sabres lost to Ottawa.

Yeah they've lost 8 in a row to Ottawa, and the Senators are 24-6-4 since 05-06 vs the Sabres, but last night was a real eye-opener. It's not that the Sabres lost, it's how they lost, and last night showed what team the Sabres really are. I'll admit, I drank some of the Buffalo kool-aid and thought they were the real deal, but this loss was a cold slap in the face. This isn't a division winning team. Can't beat Ottawa, who have won 10 in a row entering tonight. It's only a matter of time before the Sens pass them in the standings.

I don't believe they are a playoff team anymore either. Two things from last night's game hammered that point home for me. First, the thing that generated the most buzz and controversy. Chris Phillips vs Ryan Miller. Last year, Scott Gomez runs into Ryan Miller and Miller gets hurt. Response? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. Back to last night, Phillips runs into Miller on purpose and no response other than Tyler Myers, who didn't even see what happened. Even that was weak, but at least he did something unlike other people (Stafford, Vanek) on the ice.

Second, and maybe more important, the Daniel Alfredsson goal. Why was Alfie left alone? Why was the 4th line out there to cover Alfie's line? Bad coaching job by Lindy Ruff, bad job by the 4th line losing track of Alfie. Bad job all around.

A playoff team just doesn't leave a superstar all alone on the ice. A playoff team doesn't send out the 4th line to cover the aforementioned superstar. A playoff team has team toughness, both mental and physical. Last night the Sabres did and showed all those things.

The west coast road trip showed the Sabres don't have the firepower to compete with the elite teams. Last night showed the Sabres don't have the toughness to compete with the elites. That begs the question: What will the Sabres do at the deadline (or before the Olympic break)?

I know this won't be popular, but I say do nothing. If anything, I'd sell. If teams called about Drew Stafford, Toni Lydman, Nathan Gerbe, Jason Pominville or Steve Montador, I'd sell those parts for draft picks or really young prospects. Right now, the Sabres are still in third place in the conference. That means to me the Sabres are one trade (Kovalchuk) away from the Stanley Cup, and that's clearly not the case.

Another issue from last night's game deserves some attention. The HD camera overhead wasn't working last night, and therefore led to a Sabres goal not counting. For the record, I didn't think it was in, as there was no white ice between the puck and the red goal line, which is the requirement for a goal to count.

If there was a camera in the net or above the glass behind the net, then it certainly would have been resolved quicker. Whether the NHL is at fault or the Sabres are at fault doesn't matter. If the Sabres actually cared about their broadcast and the way it looks on TV, then that wouldn't have been a issue. The Sabres have no but themselves to blame for that one.

A Perfect 10?

The Sabres begin a very important stretch of games tomorrow night. A 7 game, 14 day road trip is as follows:

Tomorrow - Atlanta - 7:00
Saturday - Islanders - 7:00
Monday - Phoenix - 7:00
Tuesday - Anaheim - 10:00
Thursday - Los Angeles - 10:30
Next Saturday - San Jose - 10:30
Next Monday - Vancouver - 10:00

A total of 14 points is possible. I'll tell you what I want to see. I want to see this team pick up AT LEAST 9 or 10 points. Not unrealistic. 9 or 10 points, then maybe, JUST MAYBE, I'll hop on the bandwagon. Although, we'll need to see how Ryan Miller plays after the Olympics. That however, is another discussion for another day. On to their upcoming trip.

This team struggles against Atlanta in almost the same ways it struggles against Ottawa, despite an OT win in their last meeting. Islanders should be a win, The Phoenix game is one I feel can go either way. Yes the Yotes are good on home ice, but it's a 7:00 faceoff back east. I think that will help the blue and gold. Anaheim's a shell of what they used to be. LA is a very good, young skilled team that will be a challenged. The Sharks have Marleau, Thornton and Heatley. Oh and a very good goalie in Nabokov. Vancouver is a dangerous team like LA.

If Buffalo is who we think they are, if they truly are a division winning team, then anything less than 9 or 10 points is a failure.

Speaking of Millsie, when do you play his backup? Against the Isles is probably the best plan. Save Miller for the west coast.

I never thought this was a playoff team. I didn't think they made the necessary changes in the offseason. Yet,they lead the northeast. They have 61 points through 44 games. Now, if we assume the cutoff point in the east is in the 92-93-94 point range like it's been since the lockout, then they need about 31 points the rest of the way through to get back to the playoffs.

Earning 10 on this road trip goes a long way to that goal.

Special Commentary 7 - Mass Hysteria

I'd like to begin by stating that I do not watch the local news every single day, so I don't know how long this has been going on. but I noticed something a few days ago that I thought warranted a special commentary.

John Murphy, the voice of the Buffalo Bills, and sports director of WIVB-TV here in Buffalo, delivered some type of commentary called "Murphy's law". He proceeded to go on a tirade about a report that the Bills and Jacksonville Jaguars were considered candidates to move to Los Angeles. Majestic Realty Group is the group in question that wants an NFL in LA. Murphy then proceeds to call them "real-estate boys", "pirates", "vultures", and "scavengers". All the while, being visibly upset and furious, which is understandable, given he works for the Bills.

Yet that's the problem, Mr. Murphy. YOU WORK FOR AN NFL TEAM. You use your position as sports director to spew your propaganda. Whether or not the Bills should move isn't the issue here. The fact is using the position of sports director of WIVB to spew your personal; belief IS WRONG. As sports director, your job is to deliver sports news and scores, not opinion and propaganda like some self-serving demagogue.

Look, I get that Bills fans are nervous about the future of their team. They are very passionate and support a crappy team year in and year out. The fact is the Bills are in a small market, the owner doesn't have a succession plan, the stadium is 37 years old, this team doesn't have a QB, Buffalo is dying at a very rapid rate, hedging it's future on Bass Pro and a redeveloped waterfront that will never come to fruition. Did I mention they sell a game to Toronto every year?

I don't speak for Majestic Realty Group, nor do I endorse them, but DAMNIT, Mr. Murphy, you're wrong. You and the other three news channels here spread mass hysteria over this story. Which brings me to another point. Why is this any different from the other stories of this type? The viability of the Bills will ALWAYS be questioned. Why is what Majestic Realty Group says any different?

Mr. Murphy, on this subject, you are as biased as they get. There is no such thing as unbiased reporting. Everyone has a bias, everyone has an agenda. Everyone has a price. Everyone has a cause they they'll do anything for. We know where you stand. So to you, I say this: DO YOUR FUCKING JOB. Tell me what happened, who did it happen to, where, when, why, and how did it happen. Supply the scores and a couple of sound bytes. This type of propaganda deserves to be on a blog, or on twitter. Unlike you, I don't have a cushy TV job, but I do have a blog, and using my powers of blogging, i say this to you: Give me scores and highlights, instead of preaching like some self-serving demagogue.

If you can't do that, get off of my TV.

Random Thoughts

Sabres and Lightning tonight at HSBC. Can't say I'm a fan of these games.

Loved Tampa since day one. I went to their first practice at (at the time) the Lakeland Civic Center. I was at game 6 of the 1996 east quarterfinals vs Philadelphia. I have game 7 of the Stanley cup finals saved forever on my DVR. They are my team. At the same time, I like the Sabres. I lived here since September 2000 and their playoff runs in 05-06 and 06-07 were very exciting.

I've gone to many Lightning/Sabres games over the years. Saw Steven Stamkos score his first two NHL goals in a rare Lightning win in Buffalo. There was the 7-2 Tampa loss in which the second period was shortened because of a Paul Gaustad hit.

My favorite has to be March 19, 2008. Lightning up 4-1 after 40 minutes, lose 7-4. Saddest part, I saw it coming. I figured it would happen. Silent car ride home until I yelled at the radio when Paul Hamilton made fun of Karri Ramo.

I think I'll stay on the sidelines tonight.

Congrats to Andre Dawson making it into the Baseball hall of fame. Well deserved honor. Now answer me this question: How is it Bert Blyleven fails to make it in, yet Pat Hentgen, Kevin Appier, and David Segui get one vote each, and 5 voters submit blank ballots?

Absolute disgrace. DISGRACE.

You probably don't care, but my ballot would have been Dawson, Blyleven, Alomar, and Larkin. Dawson should have been in long before now. Blyleven should have gone in years ago, Alomar may be the greatest second basemen in last 50 years, and Larkin is one of the best shortstops in recent memory.

Blyleven should go in next year. Like Dawson, he should be the only one going in next year.

Hockey may be my favorite sport, but my first love is auto racing. If it has tires, an engine and goes around a track, odds are I'll watch it. Most everyone in the United States loves NASCAR, and so do I. The IRL is good when the Month of May comes around and when more than 2 teams are winning all the races. The open wheel split caused lots of problems for the IRL and helped NASCAR be wildly popular.

Yet in 2010, no racing series will have more drama or storylines than in Formula 1. That's right! F1.

But wait a minute: There aren't any American drivers in F1. True. There isn't a US Grand Prix anymore. Also true.

There will, however, be an American team, which is good. Michael Schumacher, the 7 time world champion is coming back. Jenson Button, the current world champion, will team with Lewis Hamilton, the 2008 world champion at Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. Scuderia Ferrari should rebound with Fernando Alonso joining the returning Felipe Massa. World champion constructor Brawn GP has been bought by Mercedes and turned into Mercedes GP with the aforementioned Schumi and felow German Nico Rosberg. The Red Bull Renault team, which finished second in the world championship with Sebastien Vettel and Mark Webber should be in the mix. In addition. there will be no refueling next year.

Season starts March 14 in Bahrain. Can't wait!

I like the Buddy Nix hire. Is he in house? Yes, but remember he's only been here for less than a year. Let's see who he brings in as coach.

For the record, I endorse Brian Schottenheimer, the current offensive coordinator of the Jets.

Yeah, I know people don't like him, but he has the #1 rushing offense in the league, and the Bills should be a big rushing team, given they play in a cold environment perfect for "pounding the rock".

Thomas Jones may have a lot to do with it, but still. #1 rushing team in the league.

I find making predictions a waste of time. I've done them before, and I'm not any good. So, we're going to try something different. We're going to do a top ten list. These are the top ten moments in Buffalo sports (according to me). Enjoy!

10. Bisons have one of worst years in modern era. A lot of optimism were away after the herd fell on their face to start the year. Final record: 56-87.

9. Bandits raise championship banner and fail to repeat. Arguably Western NY's most successful team, the Bandits failed to repeat as NLL champs.

8. Mike Grier returns to the Sabres. Very few, if anyone saw this coming. One player does not a team make, but it's hard to argue with their start. As of this writing, the Sabres are 20-9-2. We'll see if this keeps up in March, but right now, they look good.

7. Indians leave herd for Columbus, Metropolitans arrive. One of the best parent club - farm team arrangements dissolved in 2009. As noted, the Mets first year in the B-LO was less than stellar.

6. Dick Jauron fired.

5. 2009 Pro Football Hall Of Fame ceremony. A good night to be a Bills fan as Bruce Smith and Ralph Wilson were enshrined in Canton, OH.

4. Turner Gill leaves UB for Kansas. Turned UB from a joke to MAC champions. Turned that into a gig at KU. Leaves UB in a better spot than when he arrived.

3. UB's first bowl game since 1958. UB played their first bowl game since declining an invite to play FSU in the Tangerine bowl. They lost to UCONN, 38-20

2. Patrick Kane's arrest. South Buffalo's most famous hockey player got into a fight with a taxi cab driver over the summer.

And the number one Western NY sports sto...... Who's kidding who, you people can probably figure it out.

Sabres play the Blackhawks tonight, and it's a real impor.......

You know friends, I'm sorry, I can't do this. Something's been on mind for the last 4 or 5 years, and I can't hold back any longer. It's time to stand up and say something. So here goes:

The Sabres TV broadcast is pathetic. There. I said it. It sucks! It's the worst in the league. The whole thing is one big tirefire. Yeah, I said it, it fucking sucks. I ain't gonna sit here anymore and pretend everything's OK, cause it's not. There are AHL games better produced than this bullshit. Hell, even some public access shows are better produced. I'm pissed.

First off, they insist, INSIST, on using "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions. I'm sorry, I should say they got a orchestra or a high school band or whatever to play "Rock You Like A Hurricane" by the Scorpions (you know, helps keep costs low! *thumbs up*). I hate it. Hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it, hate it. I FUCKING HATE IT. I can't record the games on the DVR anymore because of that. I can't listen to WGR radio without hearing it every 30 fucking seconds. I used to like that song. I don't now. Thanks Sabres for ruining that song for me forever!

(by the way. this blog entry may contain some inappropriate words. Probably should have told you at the start. My bad!)

There's no pregame show. Because heaven forbid fans may want injury news or trade news or signings or stuff you get on pregame shows. A pregame show? That's crazy! Who'd want that?

Then we get to the game telecast. Is there anything in the Sabres/MSG contract that forbids them from using more than 6 cameras? How about a net cam? Maybe a camera behind the net like every other team uses? A camera in the scoreboard? Camera on the ice in front of the Sabres after a win? Something? Anything? I saw highlights of the game vs the Caps the other night from the Caps feed, and it looks like they had to bring cameras with them from Washington because the Sabres broadcast department (if there even is one) is too cheap to use more cameras. I watch highlights on the NHL Network of other games, and it seems like other teams put more effort into their broadcasts than the Sabres do.

I understand sponsorship of the power play and the penalty kill, but the Sabres have sponsors for EVERYTHING. That was the Sabres' 15th shot on goal, and 15 minutes could save you 15% or more on car insurance. Call today.

Want HD road games? You got it! Only if it's games at the Rangers, Devils and Islanders, that is.

This may have more to do with the arena, but all I see are seats and an occasional set of stairs. Maybe that was done on purpose when the arena was built, but still. Blue seats from one end to the other. Very exiting.

Again, this is more to do with the arena, but HSBC Arena is nothing but blue seats and walls. All HSBC has is one long ribbon board and an HD scoreboard that looks like every other scoreboard these days. Xcel Energy Center has a lighthouse. Prudential Center has lots of LED ribbon boards and open press boxes. The other 29 arenas have something that's recognizable to the fans and it translates on TV, a "je ne sais quoi". HSBC Arena doesn't have that, and it translates on TV. It's those kinds of things that could bring in new fans to the sport. And don't tell me "the fans make the arena special" or something like that. Minnesota got 19,000 for a high school hockey game, and they have a lighthouse in their building.

Then we get to the postgame show. Want highlights? Sure, just wait 20 or so minutes while the two hosts blab unnecessarily. Want to hear the players? You can, until the signal goes out. Want the guy holding the MSG microphone to ask a question? Sorry, no can do. Lindy Ruff's press conference live? Nope! Game stats? Forget it! Seeing the three stars after the game? No you can't, because that's the time for the hosts to start blabbing for 30 to 40 minutes.

Most people around here hate VERSUS. VERSUS is miles better than MSG (the Sabres) in the production department. The reason people here don't like VERSUS is beacuse it's not Rick and Harry. Fine! This isn't a "Rick and Harry" thing, this is a "the Sabres are too cheap to put any effort into the TV broadcast" thing.

This kind of crap didn't happen when EMPIRE was around. Since the Sabres shacked up with MSG (the Rangers, Islanders and Devils network), the quality of the broadcast has gone downhill, much of that is the Sabres' own doing.

By the way, do you notice the Rangers, Devils and Islanders telecasts are much better? That's what happens when you put even a tiny amount of effort into your TV presentation. All the games in HD, more than 4 cameras, no horrendous orchestra, band, horn group, guy with accordion and toy trumpet, whatever playing awful theme music.

Why the Sabres don't put any effort into their TV broadcasts is a mystery. I'd rather have no TV or even Sabres Pay-Per-View, then watch this crap. Too bad the radio side's not much better, or I'd listen to that.

Stark Reality

So, Turner Gill is a candidate for the head coaching position at Kansas, huh? Say goodbye to Turner Gill, UB.

You say Warde Manuel, UB's athletic director, is on Michigan's short list? Say goodbye to Warde Manuel , UB.

Turner Gill's daughter is enrolled at Kansas, and Gill made a name for himself as a quarterback at Nebraska under Tom Osborne. The odds are good he's gone. Manuel is a Michigan alum who turned UB into a conference champion. Enough said

In 4 seasons at UB, Gill has a 20-30 record and a MAC title. Turner Gill is a very good coach. He turned UB around, which everyone thought would never happen. He used his success here to likely earn a high profile job. One he HAS TO TAKE for 2 reasons. 1) Opportunities like this don't come around often.

2) This is a hockey town. Has been since 2005, and probably always will be. The Sabres are discussed and dissected every day of the year. UB football isn't hockey, and therefore just doesn't matter.

That's why UB's never going to be in a position to be a college football force, no matter how bad a certain local sports anchor wants it. UB will never go to a major bowl game. It's highly unlikely they'll ever make it back to the MAC championship. They are arguably one of the worst teams, if not THE worst team, in arguably the worst conference in college football. They've been that way for years. Their MAC championship last year was a fluke.

They don't have world class facilities like a Florida State or a Kansas or Georgia or Ohio State or USC or Nebraska or Penn State. Probably never will have the money to spend on facilities like that.

Western NY just isn't a hotbed for great high school football. The kind you'll see in Florida, Texas or California. Where's the next Naaman Roosevelt or James Starks? I don't know, he's probably on a hockey team somewhere.

UB is a doctors and dentists school, not a football or basketball school. Never has been, never will be.

FSU and Kansas and the other elite programs above spent boatloads of money on facilities and have a passion fan base that UB just can't match. The passion around here is reserved for the Bills, Sabres and Bandits.

I've lived in Florida for 15 years. I've seen what good high school football looks like. I've seen a game at Bobby Bowden Field @ Doak Campbell Stadium. UB stadium doesn't even come close to Doke.

Even Boise St and TCU have spent boatloads of money on football to get to the point where they're playing each other in the Fiesta bowl. They'll get more money and more exposure and better players.

Things UB just can't have.

Buffalo Vs Buffalo

It's an hour from the opening faceoff for the Canadiens/Sabres game at HSBC Arena. An hour and 20 minutes later, the Bills kickoff against the Jets @ the Rogers Centre. For at least an hour and ten minutes, the Sabres and Bills will compete against each other.

Here's a question for the Buffalo sports fan: Which game is more interesting to you?

The Sabres are certainly the better of the two options. They are currently in 5th place in the East, which means they are in the playoffs, albeit 26 games into an 82 game season. They have had excellent goaltending from Ryan Miller, who is a virtual lock to start for Team USA at the Vancouver Olympics. Despite a slow start from 50 million dollar winger Thomas Vanek, it appears he's getting his feet under him, playing well with Mike Grier and Tim Kennedy. I agree with Shelby at Puck Over The Glass (a blog if you're not reading, you should) in the fact that Saturday 26-25-13 was the best line for the Sabres.

Make no mistake, the team is playing well because Miller is playing well. Vezina well. Hart well. Both Vezina and Hart well!

Meanwhile at One Bills Drive, the Bills have predictably failed to live up to the high expectations set for them by the fans, the mayor, and Adam Schein. Terrell Owens has been turned into a lifeless zombie by Dick Jauron. Trent Edwards played like a rookie, and insanely defended Jauron as their popularity went down the tubes. Ultimately, Jauron was fired, Edwards was benched, and Owens had one TD catch going in to the Jacksonville game.

Enter Perry Fewell, the proverbial knight in shining armor. He turned the team into an offensive wonder, Owens doubled his TD total, and Edwards probably watched in disbelief that the football could be thrown more than 2 yards. It's too late for the Bills to make a playoff run. T.O. won't be here next year and he'll probably have to give the key to the city back. At least the new coach has some personality, although to be honest, a wet sponge has more personality than Dick Jauron.

From 8:20 to 9:30 pm, the Sabs and Bills go head to head, and to be honest, I'm not interested in the Bills. I'll spend my night watching the hockey game. I'm curious as to what will have the higher ratings in this town. The NFL is king in this country, yet Buffalo gets some of, if not THE highest ratings for hockey, a sport that even though I like, isn't very popular outside the northern U.S. and Canada.

I know where my eyeballs will be tonight!

End Of The Road

It had to happen sooner or later.

After 34 years in Tallahassee, Bobby Bowden will announce his retirement tomorrow. The Noles were embarrassed 37-10 at the hands of the #1 Florida Gators in Tim Tebow's final game.

He will leave with 388 wins, second to Penn State's Joe Paterno on the all time wins list. He turned FSU from a girl's school to national powerhouse. He won two national championships in 1993 and 1999. From 1987 to 2000, the Noles finished in the AP top 25.

He has a statue outside the Moore Athletic Center for crying out loud. The man is a legend. Now, it appears it's Jimbo Fisher's time at FSU. It will be Jimbo who will have to carve his own legacy.

Yet the question tonight is: Was he forced out, or did Bobby genuinely decide it was time? Reportedly, he was given two options: Stay on as a ambassador with little to no input in day-to-day operations, or retire. As far as I can tell, it appears he was forced out, and that's not right. Yes the program has been on the decline since 2000, the last time they went to the national championship. From 2000 to 2005, they were 55-22. Since then: 27-22. In fact since their November 11, 2006 30-0 loss to Wake Forest @ Doak, this program hasn't been the same. It still doesn't erase what Coach Bowden has done at FSU. 2 national championships sit in the Moore Athletic Center, and no one can ever take those away.

If it weren't for him, FSU would be on the same level as Tulane, North Alabama, and Buffalo.

I'm sure he doesn't want a big deal being made about it, but he should have a farewell season, and go out when he feels it's time. Not when the President of FSU and the AD decide.

Right now, out of seven division 1 schools in the great state of Florida, FSU is ahead of FIU and the fighting Schnellenbergers at FAU. Here's a question for you: Does a university who appears to have forced a man who turned a girl's school into a national champion because of a few bad years to step aside sound like the place for potential recruits to play? Didn't think so!

It's the end of an era with Bobby and Mickey Andrews leaving. Thank you, gentlemen, and all the best in retirement.

On The Road At Flames Vs Sabres

I was going to write this on Saturday, but I wanted to see how they did against the Flyers.

Sabres sweep the weekend games vs Calgary and Philadelphia. Two very tough tests against two big, physical teams on back to back nights. Gotta say, I was impressed. I thought they would fall flat on their face in Philly, but they proved me wrong. Good job!

I'll start with some thoughts on the Calgary game on Friday, since I was there.

No doubt Ryan Miller and Miikka Kiprusoff were the best players on the ice that night. Let in the goal to Daymond Langkow (5th overall pick by my Tampa Bay Lightning in 95') 1:04 into the game, but kept the Flames at bay for the final 63:56 of the game. Kiprusoff was just as outstanding, especially his glove save on Sekera in the 2nd.

Fitting that it would go to a shootout (2nd one I've seen in person after the Winter Classic). For some reason, I've always worried about Millsy in the shootout, but he was solid, despite letting in a softie against Olli Jokinen. The move Derek Roy put on Kipper was tremendous. I was hoping Tyler Myers would clinch it, but he couldn't do it.

How bout Jerome Iginla vs Ryan Miller, huh? Canada vs USA in a few months, Flames vs Sabres on Friday.

Everyone was standing for the shootout. Whoever decided to put that in the rules is a freakin genius.

Back to Langkow for a sec. Nice to see he's still around, and nice to see he's still got some miles on those tires.

Love Calgary's jerseys with the Canadian flag on one shoulder and the Alberta flag (which I just figured out what that was) on the other. Gotta get the red one. I expected to see a few more Calgary fans in my section than I did. Very nice group of fans in Calgary. No stupid ole soccer chants like another group of fans.

Overall, a fun time. Nice to see a team that doesn't come here often. It sure beats watching my Lightning get their ass kicked 7-2, or blow a 4-1 lead and lose 7-4.

Didn't see Saturday's game but did see highlights. Good job shutting down Philly's PP, which is super good and super talented. Emery let in bad goals and was WHO WE THOUGHT HE WAS! Great win on back to back nights.

Am I going to say they are a playoff team? Not yet, I want to see this team play Ottawa. Every time they play Ottawa, they look scared. I want to see if they can beat down their demons. They look like a better team than last year, though!

One last thing: TYLER MYERS IS FREAKING TALL!!!!

Hockey Time

It's hockey season again. 30 teams have ended training camp and set their sights on the Stanley Cup. Some teams made no changes this offseason, while others made changes that would make Extreme Makeover: Home Edition jealous.

Whatever road is selected, the goal remains the same. Winning the cup.

A few years ago, the Philadelphia Flyers cleaned house, and in the process returned to their winning ways. A model that the Montreal Canadiens used this offseason. At the same time, the Buffalo Sabres were on top of the mountain, only to see defections cripple them. Since then,, they've done next to nothing, off and on the ice. Since winning the cup in 2003-04, the Tampa Bay Lightning have been trying to recapture the magic. They cleaned house, but didn't reap the benefits.

So, who will be good and bad in the east this year?

There aren't any complete teams. Each team has a flaw that can be exploited, but as I see it, the 2008-09 season should be tremendous for the Flyers. They added Chris Pronger, who fits the "Broad Street Bully"mentality. His presence should make everyone better. Their goaltending is a question mark, however. Ray Emery needs to prove he's a competent goalie. I expect the Capitals to be the second best team in the east. Of all the teams, I feel they are the most balanced team in the conference. Despite trading Phil Kessel, I like the Bruins third, then the Stanley Cup champion Penguins 4th.

Carolina should be 5th. Everyone seems to count out New Jersey, but I'm not everyone. They will be 6th. The Rangers and King Henrik will be 7th, and my Tampa Bay Lightning should be 8th. Improved defense will carry the day in Hockey Bay.

But what about those teams who will miss out? Montreal made too many changes for my liking and will be 9th for it. Toronto's really improved and will contend next year. This year however, they will be 10th. Ottawa rid themselves of Dany Heatley, but will still be 11th. Florida will be twelfth. The Sabres needed a good offseason and didn't get one and will be 13th, Atlanta and the Isles bring up the rear.

I like Calgary in the West, and Philadelphia in the East, and the Flyers will win the Stanley Cup this year!

We All Need A Time Out

I think we need to have a talk.

As you are aware, Bills cornerback Leodis McKelvin had his lawn vandalized by a couple of teenagers who lack the intellectual prowess to know that's wrong. McKelvin fumbled on a kickoff with 2:00 remaining leading to the Patriots coming from behind to win. McKelvin reportedly will press charges, as he should.

The sad thing is, many in this town are supporting this behavior and the teens, letting their anger and frustration take over instead of being logical. Bills fans are embarrassed about choking another Monday night game, and understandably so, but under no circumstances should spray painting a pro athlete's lawn be acceptable.

In this day and age, sports fans, especially those in cold weather cities like Buffalo, are more angry, more emotional, and spend more time analyzing every last detail of their favorite team than ever before. 24 hour sports networks and social mediums like Twitter and Facebook certainly play a big factor. Message boards have become venues to spew venomous hate about players, coaches, organizations, and other fans. In some cases, addresses are posted so that things like what happened to Leodis occur.

Leodis should be allowed to be at home protecting his family and enjoy what little free time I'm sure he has. He should not have to worry about his lawn and his family. He should be preparing for the game on Sunday.

Unfairly, this will hurt the city of Buffalo. Now instead of a passionate and loyal fan base, someone in Deer Lodge, Montana will think Buffalo is full of psychotic wackos. Obviously, that's not true, but perception is reality, and things like this won't change that. The two teen have caused more damage to the city than they did to Leodis' lawn.

It should rightly be pointed out somebody mowed McKelvin's lawn so the vandalism is gone.

To those people who think sports is a 24/7 lifestyle, I offer this free advice: There is more to life than just sports. Go to a park, read a book, listen to your favorite tunes, find something other than sports. Sports should not be a life and death issue. You need to realize that THESE ARE JUST GAMES.

Stale Popcorn?

I wrote this as I waited in the doctor's office, hence the "Posted From My iPod Touch" thing at the bottom. It's amazing what you can do with technology these days.

Anyways, I was reading Adam Schein's coloumn on foxsports.com yesterday and something caught my attention. He said every team in the AFC East would win eIght games, including the Buffalo Bills.

No, Adam, we're not sharing a brain. This Bills team is the same 7-9 flop from last year. Without Terrell Owens, this offense can't get past the 50. This defense looks pathedic. I'm not sure it could stop a high school team. Even the special teams looks lost, and that's a very reliable group.

In the division, Tom Brady's back so the Pats are good for 10 or 11 wins. The Jets have Rex Ryan, who will make the team better. They have a QB in Mark Sanchez. Miami should still be good, although. I don't think they will win the division.

The Bills have no QB, and a head coach who's lifeless, just like his team.

Even though T.O. is my favorite player, I don't know if he's enough to save Edwards and Jauron. I think they'll be LUCKY to be 7-9 for a fourth straight year.

So no Schein, we're not sharing a brain. In fact, I'm not sure it's even in the same galaxy.

Greatness, Thy Name is Schumacher

Shhh...listen. That sound. That's the sound of people running for tickets. If it's not sold out, the European Grand Prix on August 23 will be.

Why? Because F1's king has returned. Under difficult circumstances, yes, but he's back. Michael Schumacher, returns to the Scuderia Ferrari he won seven championships in. Schumacher replaces Felipe Massa, who was injured during the second round of knockout qualifying of the Hungarian Grand Prix.

It's a big moment. The return of one of the greatest racers of this generation. 91 wins and 68 poles in 249 starts complement his seven world titles.

Many questions remain, however. Schumacher hasn't raced since October 2006, a span of nearly four years. That seems like a lifetime ago. The Formula One Schumacher left is FAR DIFFERENT from the Formula One he returns to now. How different? Consider the following:

Schumacher's last ride was the Ferrari 248 F1. Now, he will pilot the F60. A completely different beast. In 2006, he didn't have to worry about KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System). Renault and McLaren have given way to Brawn and Red Bull. In Schumacher's last season, Formula One was swimming in money and in peaceful times. Now F1 is in hard economic times, with talk of budget caps and BMW's recent announcement that they are pulling out of the series. The peace has been shattered and now F1 is teetering on the brink of war. Oh, and the F60 isn't exactly a championship contending car. It may be more competitive in recent races, but it's not the same Scuderia Ferrari in 2006.

It's not realistic to expect Schumacher to regain his old form. He may have three weeks to prepare, but no one can just hop in a race car and win.

Yet, if anyone can do it, Schumacher can. After all, if Scuderia Ferrari is Formula One royalty, then Michael Schumacher is it's king.

Long live the king.

Special Commentary 6 - Listen To The Fans, And Don't Listen To Them

Normally, I write out all my special commentaries out the night before I post them to this blog, but today is different.

Today, the news from Sabres management was shocking to everyone. Sabres GM Darcy Regier will appear tomorrow on the Sabres website answering fan questions at 12:30 pm, a full 30 minutes after free agency opens. Seriously! It all but confirms what many around here and around the league knew. The Sabres will not sign anyone tomorrow. I get that, that horse has been beaten to death. But this? Unacceptable.

Are you serious? Making the GM available 30 minutes after free agency opens to fan questions is a slap in the face to every Sabre fan. Each and everyone of them. You might as well go to their houses and personally slap them in the face. 1oth place two years running, and this is the best you can do? UNACCEPTABLE! Darcy should be on the phone with agents talking contracts, or inquiring about players on other teams. Anything short of being on the phone all day is unacceptable.

If the news of the Sabres being quiet in free agency is shocking to you, you might be the only person shocked. I doubt I will find anyone shocked they won't sign or trade for anyone. However, this news is jaw-dropping. How can an organization be so uncaring, so unashamed, so cocky as to schedule a Q&A session on free agency day. On the day you're supposed to be making this team better.

Why are we here? What's the point of giving your support to this orgain-i-zation? What's the message you're trying to send? What's your goal? Why do I have to keep asking these questions? When do you plan on giving answers? The lessons of two years ago have simply not been learned. They haven't learned then, and it's clear they haven't learned now, and they will never learn. 10th place seems to be good enough for you. You'll be lucky to see 10th place next year. The Flyers, Islanders, Bruins, my Tampa Bay Lightning, every other Eastern team will get better, while the Sabres will stand pat. Enjoy last place, boys. Again I say, UNACCEPTABLE!

There are those who arrive on time to the dance to get their choice of the pretty girls. There are those who are late and therefore do not get to dance with the pretty girls, but still get the opportunity to dance. And then there are those who don't bother to show up. They sit home alone wondering why no one talks to them. We aren't saying break the bank for Hossa or the Sedin twins. What we are saying is the same roster isn't good enough and one or two 2nd level free agents can help turn this ship around. Purging the dead weight off the roster is absolutely necessary.

As tomorrow unfolds and teams in the East makes themselves better, Sabre fans will again see zero change. The 07-08 roster was unacceptable, the 08-09 roster was unacceptable, and I GUARANTEE the 09-10 roster will be the exact same. UNACCEPTABLE!

Random Thoughts

I should be happy the the Magic made it to the NBA finals, and got farther than anyone predicted, but I'm not. They weren't ready to play vs the Lakers. They were outclassed, plain and simple. Kobe was better than superman. That's all there is to it.

A great season, no doubt. An almost perfect way to celebrate 20 years of Magic basketball. Yet, it feels like they let everyone down with their no-show in the finals.

The NHL draft is in 10 days, and the Lightning pick 2nd. They need a defenseman badly, and if the Islanders were smart, they pick the Tavares kid first, so we can get Hedman. That's all I know about the draft. That's all I care to know about the draft.

Oh, I do know one other thing, the Sabres will draft someone under 5 feet tall. It is the way they do things.

Speaking of the Sabs, I heard today on WGR that the blue and gold are the least viable team in the NHL. Considering that Buffalo's economy is at best poor, and given New York state's problems, it isn't difficult to see why that's the case.

As usual, people who don't want the truth and who get upset unless you talk about this fine city in a positive light are upset.

Here's a comment at the bottom of the story entitled "fail": "Ted Rechtshaffen YOU FAIL! What a joke..another downer trying to upset the fans. Take your negativity and hit the road....you aren't a fan of this team you tool! "

I'M SERIOUS. SOMEONE ACTUALLY WROTE THAT! My favorite part is the "you tool" line at the end. What are you, nine?

Again, given the problems in this part of the world, it's easy to see where Ted Rechtshaffen (the guest who said Buffalo's the least viable market) is coming from.

Not having a good team doesn't help either, but that's another story.

I hope you're happy, ESPN.

You got what you wanted - The Celtics going to the Eastern Conference finals. Just like the Bruins success in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and being the official network of Red Sox nation. More importantly, it's the disgusting lack of acknowledgement of not just the Magic, but any team in Central Florida. Not just the supposed worldwide leader, but everybody in the world. They seem to think all Central Florida has is Disney World.

The Magic were predicted to not make the playoffs, then they would lose in the first round, then they would lose in the second round, etc.

It's not just the Magic. When the Buccaneers won the Super Bowl in 2003, people couldn't have been less happy. When the Lightning won the Stanley Cup in 2004, people were outraged that a "non-traditional" hockey market just won the best trophy in sports.

Oh sure, give Doc Rivers plenty of air time, hell, give him his own fucking show while you're at it. Stan Van Gundy's press conference? Internet. Maybe two whole seconds on ESPN (if I'm lucky).

I want to know why all the disrespect? Is it because the sun comes out more than 5 times a year? Is it because our girls are hotter? What is it exactly?

I know ESPN's based in Red Sox nation, and I get bending over backwards for the Boston Blow Sox, and showing NESN highlights, even when the Sawx are at the grand palace that is Yankee Stadium, but giving that treatment to the Bruins and Celtics?

Maybe this rant is because I'm pissed the Magic lost, but I know the Magic are getting hosed. By the refs. By the media. By every-fucking-body.

Next year, the Magic will win the NBA title, and just like when the Bucs and Lightning won championships, you all will have to accept it.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you think the Buffalo Sabres are going to be better next year, you're crazy.

I read at Die By The Blade today that B. Thomas Golisano's not to blame for the Sabs not making the playoffs for 2 consecutive years and 5 of the last 7. I'm sorry, whoever's responsible for that article, but you're wrong.

Golisano is cheap, and it's not just the on ice product that's cheap looking. Let's start with the cutting of the scouting department and going only by videotape. How about signing a TV contract with MSG, the home of the NEW YORK RANGERS? How about the aforementioned Sabres broadcasts that look and sound like a high school A/V club production? Look at what the San Jose Sharks do for their fans. Don't expect to see any of that come to HSBC Arena anytime soon.

Tommy G. has the Sabres for only one reason: To promote his political agenda. The Sabres are a pawn to him. The minute he gets a good offer to sell the team, he'll dump them. He just doesn''t care about Sabres fans.

Many people believe underachieving players will be off the roster next year. They'll be back, just you wait and see. Many say the front office is looking for bigger, aggressive players, they aren't. They will draft the softest 5'2" 125lb kid if he's available. Sabres fans will be told that they will bring in free agents, but they will be lied to...again.

A Dark Day In Hockey Bay

It's been a horrendous year for the Tampa Bay Lightning. I thought we weren't going to be in the lottery conversation.

I thought wrong. What a surprise!

Outside of Steven Stamkos, there really hasn't been anything positive about the 08-09 season. Stamkos set a franchise record tonight vs Washington with his 22nd goal of the year. Considering the coaching fiasco and being healthy scratches numerous times during the season, it's really amazing he's been able to turn it around in the second half of the year.

There are some bright spots other than Stamkos. Marty St. Louis had his 5th straight 30 goal season. Matt Smaby and Paul Szczechura have been revaluations this year. I really think Szczechura has had a real good stretch recently, and can be one of the go-to guys for the bolts.

On the down side, Vinny's wrist injury cutting his season short. The rampant speculation at the deadline surrounding the captain's future in Hockey Bay U.S.A. The Barry Melrose fiasco. The Dan Boyle trade. The fact 50 players saw action in a Lightning sweater. 22 of those 50 were defensemen. I knew the defense was an issue, but I didn't think it was to the point where 22 d-men saw action.

Hopefully, next year will be better. A full year under Rick Tocchet should do this group some good. Management should and probably will realize that defense is the game plan this offseason. 22 defensemen = FAIL.

I'm disappointed, Hockey Bay is disappointed. Rick and the Chief are disappointed. Thunderbug's disappointed. The Ice Girls are disappointed. Why would they want to disappoint the Ice Girls?

Madness I Tell You

I love having broadband. I really love being able to watch games on my computer when the CBS affiliate decides to show the news. I love trying to fill out my bracket and trying to pick the national champions (FYI: I chose Syracuse over Louisvile). I love this time of year.

Jerry Sullivan, however, doesn't. He wants more mid-major teams to get in. He wants to see the Sienas and Butlers (who lost today, by the way) and Niagaras of the world make deep runs in the tournament.

I'm sorry, but this is the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. The best of the best. The top 65 teams fighting for the right to be called National Champions. I'm not saying the mid-majors can't provide great moments. Western Kentucky had a memorable run last year and George Mason a few years ago had a magical, improbable tourney. At the end of the day, however, UConn, Duke, and UNC should be playing for a national championship. Not Drake or Radford.

"The Big East isn’t as good as people think. No league is that good. It’s a very good league, but it’s overrated". Sully, did you watch the Big East Tourney? That was one of the most memorable basketball you'll ever see. The way Syracuse fought through 6 overtimes to beat UConn was nothing short of sensational, and you think that's overrated?

For the record, I have 4 Big East teams in the final four. Louisville, UConn, Syracuse, and Pitt. I don't believe the Big East is overrated.

I think Sully's upset Niagara's not in the tourney.

The Circus Is Coming

Terrell Owens is a Buffalo Bill. I can't believe I just typed that!

More importantly, I can't believe T.O. came here. Of all the teams in the NFL, why here? Wouldn't he want to go to a Super Bowl contender? The Jets, Patriots, Dolphins, Giants, Steelers, and Colts all make more sense than Buffalo.

That said, he'll improve this offense ten-fold. Owens will take pressure off Lee Evans. He runs routes very well, so he should be able to get open. It's worth the risk in my opinion. Yeah, he dropped 33 balls last year, his skills may be on the decline, and he may be a locker room disaster, but he still has to have something left. Plus, he'll want to prove himself to the rest of the league. Look at Randy Moss in New England. He turned his act around, and nobody thought that was possible.

It's also a one year deal, which means if T.O. does what he did in San Francisco, Philadelphia, and Dallas (and he probably will), it's only one year.

I have to admit, I'm shocked that OBD would do this, but give them credit. This opportunity doesn't come around every day.

We were waiting for the Bills to make a splash, and boy have they. A fat kid in a bathtub sized splash. Whether or not you agree with the signing, there is one thing everyone can agree on. Training camp should be fun this year.

Making The Case

Here's something you won't hear on WGR (or anywhere else Larry Quinn and Tommy G. pay to have their propaganda aired): THE SABRES SHOULD SELL AT THE DEADLINE!!!!!

Last night's game confirmed everything I need to know about this team. When compared to the rest of the Eastern conference, the Sabres don't have enough to get to the playoffs. Boston's better, Washington's better, the Devils are better, the Rangers, Flyers, Canadiens, Panthers, Hurricanes, the Penguins, too. Hell, even today, the Ottawa Senators are better. They always seem to beat the Sabs. There you go Sabre Nation. 10 teams that FOR A FACT are better than the Buffalo Sabres.

This team is way too inconsistent to mount any type of playoff success. Combine that with Thomas Vanek being out for a very long time, and you have very strong case for the Sabres to sell at the trade deadline. They won't make the playoffs. In fact, I believe that this is the start of a prolonged losing streak leading up to the deadline with games vs the Rangers, Ducks, Hurricanes, and Islanders.

Now that we've established that the Sabres are sellers, who should be thrown off the island? I've got some names:

Tim Connolly - Oft-injured and fragile, #19 is a playmaker that could put a contender over the top. He's healthy for now. What's that saying, buy low, sell high? Timmy's at a high point, see what you can get for him.

Toni Lydman - Highly valued around the league, it's evidently clear that #5 has worn out his welcome.

Henrik Tallinder - Like Lydman, he's worn out his welcome, and like #19, he's oft-injured. I'd get rid of him for a bag of pucks (if you're lucky). Somebody will be desperate.

Ales Kotalik - I like Kots, but he doesn't use his big body enough to be a factor. As much as I like him, it's time for him to go.

Daniel Paille - Signed to an contract that CLEARLY was undeserved. Has grossly underperformed aforementioned contract.

Nathan Paetsch - Simply no room at the inn with Mike Card, Mike Weber, Mike Funk, Marc Gragnani , and the 6'8" Tyler Myers waiting in the pipeline.

I'd press my luck and take whatever I could for these 6. Prospects, players, picks, a bag of used pucks, a pizza. I'll take anything.

I think the future of the Buffalo Sabres is extremely promising, I think the Buffalo Sabres of the present are extremely average.

Bills Year In Review

The Buffalo Bills sent out their 163 page "year in review" press release this week. Evidently, if you are a Bills season ticket holder, you get this in the mail.

I understand trying to be positive and having it spun the way the Bills want it spun, but some of these "highlights" are just disgusting. For example, did you know:

- Dick Jauron's the 8th coach to win 20+ games in Buffalo?

- Jauron's 21 wins are good enough for 5th place in Bills history?

-7-9 is Jauron's 2nd best season?

- Jauron's over .500 in 12 of 13 categories including 11-10 when he has a 100 yd rusher and 3-2 with 2 100 yd receivers?

Here's my favorite: Jauron stresses turnovers! Then they site Kawika Mitchell's INT's vs San Diego and @ Denver.

And you wonder why Dick Jauron's still coach?

Super Bowl 43 Pick

Super Bowl 43 is less than 48 hours away, and it's time to make my annual pick. But before I do, I have a major gripe.

Why is it that NBC needs to send Matt Lauer down to Tampa to cover the game along with the rest of the "Today Show" clowns. Matt Lauer doesn't know diddly-squat about sports. The only thing Matt Lauer knows is how to talk about people giving birth to octuplets and guzzling 600 gallons of coffee at 5am every morning.

It's not just NBC that's doing it. I could have sworn I saw Bloomberg at media day. BLOOMBERG? What the fuck were they doing there? Talking to Kurt Warner about what stocks he owns? Who gives a shit? Hey, Ben Rothlesberger, what do you think about the events at the World Economic Forum? Do the 7 people who watch Bloomberg even know who Ben Rothlesberger is? If the suits at Bloomberg think that's what their audience is interested in, then they've grossly misunderstood their audience.

Oh, I'm sorry. I'm a little distracted. I was just waiting for CNN to talk to Mike Tomlin about the Gov. Blagojevich scandal.

The purpose of news is to relay news and information to the public in a clear and concise manner. Talking to Kurt Warner about what stocks he owns isn't news. It ranks right above showing a YouTube video of a school bus full of dancing kittens.

Sorry for the rant, but that stuff really annoys me. What was I doing? Oh, yes: The annual Super Bowl pick.

First, I don't think the Arizona Cardinals deserve a Super Bowl championship. They needed a pool company to buy the remaining tickets for their wild-card game vs Atlanta.

Second, I like Pittsburgh's defense better than Arizona's. I think the new steel curtain will carry the day.

Burning The Midnight Oil

Tonight at Rexall Place, Buffalo beat Edmonton 10-2. It would have truly sucked if the Oil came back to win.

However, the road trip gets much harder after tonight with stops in Calgary, Phoenix and Anaheim. I want to see how they do in this stretch before I make a judgement on whether or not they are a playoff team.

In order to make the playoffs, the Sabs need 4 of the next 6 points available. Calgary is a very good team, the Coyotes are a highly skilled group of youngsters, and Anaheim is a physical bunch. Tough stretch, yes, but a playoff team records 4 of 6 points on a trip like this.

Another couple of things that concern me:1) The fact Buffalo scored 10 tonight. Usually the next night after a blowout, they score 2 or less and lose. I hope that's not the case tomorrow in Calgary.

2) Do you even entertain the thought of starting Patrick Lalime in Calgary? He hasn't really been playing well this year. Ryan Miller's had plenty of rest. I'd start Miller tomorrow night. Let's face it, Lalime's confidence isn't very high, and I would have pulled Miller just to give Lalime some confidence. But I'm not paid the big bucks like Lindy is, and I'm not in charge of making those decisions.

A good win, but the rest of this road trip will ultimately decide the fate of the Sabres. If they are a playoff team, they will finish the west coast trip at or above .500. If not, then they aren't a playoff team.

Hell Has Frozen Over

Just when you think you've seen it all, right Bills fans?

I can't believe Dick Jauron's coming back as coach. When the Bills were 5-1 and news surfaced of Jauron's extension, it was a deserved extension because we believed the Bills were going to the playoffs. It seemed liked the playoffs were a sure thing, we're not debating that.

Since the San Diego game, they lost 8 of their last 10, all six divisional games, and their chance at the playoffs. Yes, Trent Edwards didn't play very well and should take some of the blame, but Jauron's mistakes, follies and inability to stop the slide should have led to his firing. Not to mention THREE STRAIGHT 7-9 SEASONS.

The players are happy he's back. You want to know why the players are happy? Because they love the way he treats them during training camp. No hitting, very few two-a-days. Club Jauron at it's finest.

Not only can't I believe Jauron survived this, I can't believe Ralph Wilson insulted each and every Buffalo Bills fan. The owner said in Tuesday's press release that he "shares many of the fans' dissatisfaction with our offensive game management". He understands, but won't do what's necessary to improve the team. Talk about insulting your fans.

I don't always agree with Buffalo News columnist Jerry Sullivan, but he's right on this one. Ralph Wilson only cares about his money. The only thing about the fans he cares about is the amount of 10's and 20's in their wallets. Not only that, he wrote the book on insulting fans. Ralph is the same man who went to Toronto and made fun of the region and the people who support his team, then laughed when the Bills embarrassed themselves vs the Dolphins in Toronto. I'm not a Bills fan, but Bills fans definitely deserve better than this. They deserve a team they can be proud of. They deserve an owner who's willing to do whatever it takes to win and not strive for mediocrity. They deserve an owner who's not a piece of garbage.

The Bills could have had Eric Mangini (TWICE), they could have had Herm Edwards, Rex Ryan or Mike Shanahan. They could have had a winner. Instead they bring Jauron back. A guy, who even if Buffalo goes 19-0 next year and wins the Super Bowl, will still be one game below .500. What do you expect from a man who constantly shoots for a low standard and finds inferior head coaches who live down to it.

As 2008 comes to a close and training camp 2009 approaches, Bills fans aren't having a happy new year.

But then again, Ralph Wilson wouldn't have it any other way.

When the hell is CC going to sign with the Yankees?

I'm tired of waiting around for him to decide, and so are a lot of Yankee fans. Look, if he wants to stay home and pitch out west for less money, god bless him. He'll be the first player I can remember to take a hometown discount, and he'll piss off the player's association in the process. If he wants the money (and he probably does), why doesn't he sign now? No other team will give him the money the Yankees will. End. Of. Story.

That's not the only starter the Bronx Bombers need, but the problem is who's out there. A.J. Burnett? I'm sorry, I wouldn't give him 5 months, much less 5 years. That's not going to be the Yankees' problem though, as the Braves seem to want him. There are rumors the Yanks are entertaining the thought. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

There's Derek Lowe, who I would like to see, but no more than three years. I like what he did in LA, but the AL east is completely different than the NL west. I fear he'll get tossed around. A guy I'd really like to see in pinstripes is Ben Sheets. Yeah, there are concerns about his elbow, but when healthy, he's one of the best pitchers in the game.

I'd also like to see the Yanks get rid of Robinson Cano. I hate him. He doesn't hustle, isn't a character guy, and is a bad influence in the locker room. I'd rather have the o-dog, Orlando Hudson. He's a good hitter, gets on base, and is a very good guy in the clubhouse, or all of the things Robby Cano isn't, don't ya know.

Hopefully, we'll see some action next week at the winter meetings in Vegas. That would be more interesting than the Bills or Sabres right now .

Monday Night Fail

I see some dark clouds in the sky, and it's not because it's about to snow.

Monday night, the Cleveland Browns pay a visit to Orchard Park. I'll get right to it: I think the Bills will get crushed. They're not playing well, Trent Edwards doesn't look right, they can't run the ball to save their lives, both the O-line and the D-line aren't good, the defense is disappointing, and Dick Jauron is, without a doubt, the worst coach in the NFL.

There is a another reason why I don't feel good about this game. Look at last year's MNF game vs the Cowboys. They had an upset in their pocket and let it fall out. Another disappointment in a long line of bitter disappointments in this town. From Jim Lorentz killing a bat in the 1975 Stanley Cup finals and the 2006 Eastern Conference Finals vs Carolina to 4 consecutive Super Bowl losses and Music City Miracle. Face it folks, when Buffalo's on a national or international stage, they fail.

Combine the aforementioned misery of Buffalo sports and the recent play of the Bills, I can't see this ending well, despite the Bills being favorites.

I'm wondering if Buffalo loses this week, will they ever win again this season? The next game after MNF is in KC against the Chiefs, and that's not going to be easy. Mike Singletary has the Niners playing better and that won't be easy either. Then three AFC east games in 4 weeks starting with the Miami game in Toronto, @ the Jets and the finale vs New England. Plus the penultimate contest at the Denver Broncos.

5-1 to 5-11? It's very possible, and should that happen, Dick Jauron unequivocally has to be fired, I don't care if Ralphy baby likes him. Someone needs to take the fall for this should it come to fruition.

Battle Of The Superpowers

Tomorrow night on HBO PPV, Joe Calzaghe looks to continue his undefeated streak by beating Roy Jones Jr. at the Mecca Of Boxing, Madison Square Garden.

The biggest question for me going into this fight is what Roy Jones are we going to see.

Are we going to see the old Roy. Are we going to see the highly skilled quick hands that made him the best pound for pound fighter I've seen? Are we going to see an old Roy? Is his speed gone? Was his recent performance against Tito Trinidad due to the fact Trinidad hadn't fought for 32 months?

Calzaghe enters this fight after a split decision victory against Bernard Hopkins in Las Vegas on April 12. In the process, he won Hopkins' Ring Magazine light heavyweight belt (the linear and true title). He is 45-0 with 32 knockouts and defended his alphabet title belt 20 times before unifying the super middleweight division last year. He will defend the title against Jones.

I believe Calzaghe has the faster hands and will give Roy problems. I don't know which Roy Jones will show up @ the Garden, but I think Roy will keep it close. I like Calzaghe by a close unanimous decision tomorrow night.

Epic Fail

Remember when I said the only way the Bills would miss the playoffs is if they suffered a met - like collapse?

Losing three of the last four + losing two straight division games + me saying Buffalo would make the playoffs = EPIC FAIL

They made Brett Favre looked like the old Brett Farve instead of an old Brett Favre on Sunday. There was no way for Marshawn Lynch or Fred Jackson or Xavier Omon or Thurman Thomas to have any success on Sunday. That offensive line looked so soft, kleenex tissues look like concrete in comparison!

A couple of things are clear after the Jets 26-17 beatdown of Buffalo. First, winning the AFC East is no longer possible in my opinion. No more talk of first round byes or home field advantage. Stop making plans for Tampa in early February. I'm not so sure they're going to the playoffs after what I saw the last two weeks.

Next week they go to Foxboro, and I guarantee they will lose. I thought they would lose before they imploded, now I'm positive they'll be blown out. Even without Tom Brady and Rodney Harrison, this team just keeps going. It's a testament to the job Bill Belichick has done not just this year, but throughout his coaching career.

After the Pats, they host the Browns on Monday night, which I think is a loss. Then they go to KC, which SHOULD be a win. Just like KC, they should beat the Niners. Then they host the fish in Toronto, go to the J-E-T-S, JETS, JETS, JETS, fly to Denver, before finishing out the season vs New England. Given the way Buffalo has played over the last month, I see them going 3-5 in the second half of the season.

Final Record: 8-8

Giving Dick Jauron an extension for what looks like YET ANOTHER 8-8 season? One Bills Drive, WTF? You all should be ashamed of yourselves!

The More Things Change

Unbeaten in regulation? Not anymore. 6-0-2? Better make that 6-1-2. The Sabres came back to HSBC Arena on Monday night and lost 5-2 to the rival Senators.

The sad thing is, I kind of saw it coming. Coming back from Colorado after playing a taxing two game stretch at Minnesota and at the Avalanche, going through two time zones, and not arriving in the buff till 4 am just spelled disaster. No Rivet, Tallinder, Hecht, Gaustad, and the very frail Tim Connolly didn't make things any easier.

Oh, and since 2005-06, Ottawa's only 16-5-4 vs Lindy's bunch.

16-5-4

Let that sink in for a moment. When these two teams get together, Ottawa wins 80% of the time. 80% That's got to change. If Buffalo wants to get back to the playoffs, or possibly win the northeast division, you have to beat your divisional rivals, and that includes beating Ottawa.

Why do they struggle vs the Sens? I don't know. It could be that Spezza, Heatley, and Alfredsson intimidate the Sabres so much, or the way they make below average goalies like Ray Emery and Alex Auld look like Vezina trophy candidates.

Monday night was especially brutal. What was Lalime doing on Spezza's breakaway? Why do certain players (Afinogenov) insist on skating into the Ottawa zone when there are 4 Senators on the blue line?

Ottawa entered HSBC Arena desperate for a win. On Thursday, another desperate team comes to town in the form of MY Tampa Bay Lightning. The Bolts picked up a 3-2 win in Toronto tonight. Captain Vinny Lecavalier scored twice and Steven Stamkos picked up his 1st NHL assist in the game. Lucky for Tampa, they won't have to deal with Rivet, Tallinder, Hecht, Gaustad, and Timmy.

If Buffalo played like they did Monday, then Tampa should win easily.

Bills Fever Spreading

The Bills are 4-1 and will look to make it 5-1 Sunday vs San Diego. I have to say, I'm not really surprised they're off to a good start. After all, I thought they would be a playoff team before the season, and I'm going to stay consistent.

Couple of points: 1) The Arizona loss doesn't look nearly as bad as it did 2 weeks ago, because of Dallas' loss in the desert. 2) The Jacksonville win (@ Jacksonville no less) looks better every week.

Having made those two points, this will be the toughest test for these young Bills. Injured toe or not, Ladainian Tomlinson is the best running back in the NFL. LT at 50% is better than beast mode @ 110%. Also, Chris Chambers and Antonio Gates are two big targets for Philip Rivers. If McGee can't go, it's going to be brutal.

The wild card Sunday is Trent Edwards. It appears he'll start Sunday after practicing this week. If the o-line is as porous as it was at Arizona, Trent's in major trouble. Maybe putting the left tackle back in the lineup after his holdout wasn't the best idea after all.

Look, unless the Bills suffer a Mets like collapse, they will go to the playoffs, but until I see them beat San Diego or New England or even the Jets and Broncos, I'm not ready to give the Bills the AFC east crown. We haven't seen the Bills play divisional games yet. I know everyone around here's printing playoff tickets, but you all need to slow down.

2008 NHL Preview

The Lightning come home from Prague 0-2, and the Sabres start Friday against Montreal. The National Hockey is back for another season.

We'll start with the bolts. Tampa made a lot of changes this offseason, bringing in Ryan Malone, Gary Roberts among others. They also drafted Steven Stamkos 1st overall in the 2008 draft, and Barry Melrose leaves ESPN to become the coach. Mike Smith should provide much needed stability in goal. While many will question the defense, I believe that this team could contend for the Southeast division, but should make the playoffs. I see them as a 6th seed.

As far as Buffalo's concerned, I like the pickup of Craig Rivet. He brings much needed toughness and grit to the team. He'll likely block shots as well, which hasn't been seen here since Jay Mckee left. Even with that pickup however, this is still practically the same team. Kotalik, Afinogenov, the oft injured Connolly are all still here. You would think same team = same result.

There are two big differences between last year's team and this year's squad. 1) Teppo's back. You can't discount his veteran experience. 2) The aforementioned Rivet is the captain. No more rotating the "c" like a hot potato. One person and only one person is the man. Based on these differences, I see Buffalo as the 8th seed.

Guess who won't be playing Sunday vs the Seahawks? That's right! Jason Peters has decided to extend his holdout into the regular season. He thinks he deserves more money, and he's right.

However, is there more to this than just wanting more money?

On July 25, NFL Network's Adam Schefter reported Peters intended to sit the entire season if necessary, and as I've stated before, I believe he will holdout the entire season. That's not good news, and not what Bills fans want to hear, but I've been right on my predictions about 80% of the time.

This whole thing has been very strange. His agent hasn't been talking with the Bills. Peters hasn't been in communication with teammates. The fact that all of this is super bizarre leads me to believe that money's not the only thing he's unhappy about. He's from Queen City, Texas, which isn't too far from Dallas, home of the Cowboys. Jerry Jones would love to pay Peters $12 million a year to play in his brand new stadium. Peters gets his money, gets to play in his home state, and have a realistic chance at winning the Super Bowl.

In other words: I don't think Jason Peters wants to be a Buffalo Bill.

If I'm the Bills, I trade Peters to the Cowboys, and get something, anything for him. A left tackle, a draft pick, cash (Jerry's got a ton of it, he won't mind giving away some for the second best left tackle in the NFL), a bag of footballs. Whatever it takes to end this situation, because the longer it goes, the worse it's gong to get.

Defense Wins Championships

Got my NFL preview issue of Sports Illustrated yesterday. Not that you care or anything.

I believe that defense wins championships. The Ravens won the Super Bowl in 2000, and my Bucs won a world title in 2003 with defense. The Detroit Red Wings won the Stanley Cup this year because of their fantastic defense. The New Jersey Devils won three Stanley Cups and are in the playoffs every year because of the trap, no matter how boring it is.

Point is, super offenses puts fannies in seats, super defenses puts trophies in trophy cases.

Tampa Bay has a young, growing, developing defense. For years, the Bucs had a old, long-in-the-tooth defense. Not anymore. Gaines Adams is 25. So is middle linebacker Barrett Rudd. Free safety Tanard Jackson's 23. I like Tampa to win the NFC South easily, not just because of their defense, but also because their schedule is easy. @ the Saints, ATLANTA, @ Chicago, GREEN BAY, @ Denver, and that's just to open the season. I don't see them losing till week 8 at Dallas.

Another team with a good defense that will surprise is...wait for it... the BUFFALO BILLS!!?!???! I like the addition of Marcus Stroud. It's not going to be as easy to run on them as it was last year with Stroud and former Viking Spencer Johnson on the defensive line. Linebacker Kawika Mitchell joins the returning Paul Posluszny to bolster the LB's. I think the cornerbacks are the surprise of this defensive unit. Terrence McGee and Jabari Greer are the starters. Add my guy Leodis McKelvin and Ashton Youboty and draft pick Reggie Corner, and free agent pick-up Will James, and the CB spot has a ton of depth.

The holdout of Jason Peters, which I think will last the ENTIRE season, by the way, will hinder the offense. In any case, the defense should make up for any problems the offense has.

Do I think Buffalo will win the Super Bowl? Absolutely not. Do I think Tampa will win the Super Bowl? Probably not. What I do believe is that Tampa and Buffalo will be competitive this year because of their respective defenses.

FYI: I think the New England Patriots will beat the Buccaneers in Super Bowl XLIII, and Buffalo will sneak into the playoffs.

Random Thoughts

I must be the only one who was surprised to hear that Melky Cabrera was sent to Scranton.

Look, it's not all his fault. Let's pin some of the blame on good ol' Robby Cano. This guy has no heart, no passion, can't hit if his life depended on it. He's hurting the team simply by being in the lineup. If anyone needs to go down to Scranton, it's him. I still think Melky is an important part of the Yankee lineup. He shouldn't have to pay for someone else's stupidity (Robby Cano, don't ya know).

I also don't understand letting Richie Sexson go. He was doing what he was brought in for: to hit left handers, and he was doing a decent job, too. A .250 avg, an on base % of 371 overall. Against lefties - .273, and a 393 OBP. Oh, btw, a .455 slugging %. So, why did the Yaks let him go again?

Forget the AL east, we'll be lucky to win the wild card.

Back in February, I wrote about the Bills and their Toronto series and Ralph's laugh-a-thon. Yesterday was the first game of that series. Trent Edwards looked good, the offense surprised me buy putting up 14 points against Pittsburgh's first team defense, and my guy Leodis McKelvin returned a kickoff 95 yards for a TD in a win over the Steelers.

This offseason was a very good one for the Bills. One year ago, I wrote how bad the front office handled things. Letting McGahee, Fletcher, and Clements go was a mistake, and how stupid it was to rely on an undersized defense. Can't say that this year. Marcus Stroud is a improvement by himself. Hopefully, he'll stay healthy. Kudos to Bills management for finally doing something right. will they make the playoffs? I'm not sure. They could, but I don't know. It depends on the offense. If they are somewhat consistent, they're in. If not....

I'm sorry, but the Sabres don't deserve to be on national TV (Versus in the United States and TSN in Canada) 15 times. That's reserved for good teams like Montreal or Detroit. I think the Sabres are a playoff team, given their offseason activity, but who thinks they are a threat in the East? Montreal, Pittsburgh, the Rangers, Flyers, and Devils are all better than Buffalo. Tampa Bay is much better than Buffalo. Don't forget about Ottawa as they still have Buffalo's number. Speaking of Tampa, I think they will surprise a lot of people this year.

This is another reason why the Bills are going to leave Buffalo someday.

Construction on the $333 million Buffalo Creek Casino was ordered to be stopped by a federal judge yesterday. This planned casino would create 1800 jobs and bring in desperately needed revenue for the city. Today, the president of the Seneca Nation of Indians announced construction will continue, and Erie County executive Chris Collins urged the Seneca Nation to continue fighting the decision.

One of the groups fighting the casino is the "Citizens for a better Buffalo". These people are upset about gambling and saying Buffalo doesn't need it. I wonder what they think about the casino in Niagara Falls and Salamanca. I guess it's OK because it's Niagara Falls and not Buffalo.

It's not just the casino they're against. They are also against the recently opened inner harbor, tearing down the Aud, a Bass Pro shop coming to the old Aud site, tearing down the Skyway, the new Erie County courthouse, Pearl Street Grill opening a new patio, and anything else that may be thought of. CFABB doesn't want change. They don't want progress. They want things to be the way it was in the 1930's. And they wonder why people are leaving WNY.

One of the people against this casino was on channel 2 this evening. When asked what he wants on the site, he did everything but answer the question. It's a shame, I would have liked to hear his plans for the site. The truth is "citizens for a better Buffalo" doesn't have a plan to make Buffalo better. The only thing they seem interested in doing is complainabout other people making Buffalo better.

Here's what I want to know from these people. What is your plan to make Buffalo better? What idea could possibly be better than 1800 jobs and over $300 million in revenue? Are you all that afraid of progress? If there's anybody from this "citizens for a better Buffalo" group reading this, please leave a comment and tell me why you don't want progress.

I'd like to know, and so would this community.

Calm Before The Storm

So, the NHL salary cap is going up again this year? Well, color me surprised.

The cap for the 2008-09 season is now $56.7 million with a floor of $40.7 million or $1.7 million than the cap during the 2005-06 season (the first season since the lockout). Why did we have a lockout again? I guarantee there will be another lockout on 5 years if this keeps up.

What's the plan for the Buffalo Sabres next year, you ask? Well, GM Darcy Regier said " We'll be above at the midpoint. How far above it? We'll have to wait and see. But we have some room, but not a lot of room". The key phrase in that sentence is "we'll have to wait and see". For the record, the midpoint of this year's cap is $48.7 million.

What this indicates to me is two fold. First, re-signing Miller and Pominville leaves about $6-8 million for the RFA's (Restricted Free Agents - example: Paul Gaustad) on the team. Secondly, Darcy's plans probably have to go through Tom Golisano before he can do what he wants.

July 1 is when the free agency pool opens, and while most every other team will jump in and makes waves, I get the feeling that Tommy G. will drive by the pool on his way to mediocrity. Brooks Orpik, Jason Smith, and Darcy Tucker can help this team, but I think Tommy G is sold on the fact that what he has now is more than good enough to win and compete, and he's right. They can compete.

For LAST PLACE, that is.

I'll believe it when I see it when it comes to the Sabres making changes. Drafting big kids is not enough. Drafting is about the future. Free Agency is about right now. Even though there's been talk of changes to this roster, I still think last year's team will be the team you see in 2008-09. Yes, that means another year of Kotalik, Afinogenov, the oft-injured Timmy C. and all the rest of last year's disappointments.

July 1 is now 5 days away. What happens during this time period will more than likely determine how good or bad the Sabres are this upcoming season.

Changes All Around

As the Detroit Red Wings hoist the Stanley Cup for 07-08, the team that won it 5 years ago has made a significant change.

As expected, John Tortorella was fired by the Bolts. I'm not surprised at this. Change has to happen if you finish last, like the Lightning did. This fuels the speculation that Barry Melrose will leave ESPN and set up shop at Channelside Drive. The new owner wants a big name coach, and apparently he wants a coach with big hair.

In my opinion, this won't end well. Melrose hasn't coached in over a decade. He may be aware of the changes in the NHL since his last bench stint, however, he will need time to adjust.

John's going to be employed again, that's a fact, and he said he'll keep his house in Tampa because he likes the area. He may be a fiery coach, but this proves he's a smart coach.

Meanwhile, at the foot of Washington Street, Darcy Regier has been signing his prospects left and right. Dennis Perrson joins South Buffalo's Tim Kennedy, Felix Scultz, Chris Butler, Jhonas Enroth and Nathan Gerbe as Sabres who should start packing for Portland soon.

Don't get me wrong, it's great that they are in the fold, but where Darcy and company will ultimately be judged is July 1: The start of free agency. There's a huge hole in the defense which has just gotten bigger with the announcement that Dimitri Kalinin won't be back next year.

Local kid Brooks Orpik, Jason Smith, and John-Michael Liles are all good options, however, I get the sick feeling Tommy Golisano and Larry Quinn are going to keep things the way they are. That means no free agents, no outside help, no nothing.

If Tommy G. wants to go that way and keep things the way they are, there certantly won't be a Stanley Cup parade next year in the WNY.

Joba Time

I'm not one to question the decisions of Yankees management, but moving Joba Chamberlain out of the bullpen and into the rotation is a sign of desperation.

Make no mistake, if Ian Kennedy and Phil Hughes weren't struggling, and the Yankees weren't fighting to stay out of the AL East cellar, and if the Yankee offense showed up for every game, you wouldn't hear any talk of turning Joba into a starter. However, they are and Joba's going to be a starter.

There are a ton of problems with the Joba experiment. First, who are you going to take out of the rotation? You can't take Darrell Rasner out with the way he's been going. I may not be impressed with the way Moose has been going, but he's an important part of the rotation. In the end, Ian's got to go back down, and the way he pitched tonight, it had better be PDQ. 8 games with no win = pack your bags for Scranton.

Secondly, the bullpen is going to be exposed. Kyle Farnsworth? Sorry, he's another Scott Procter. Edwar Ramirez may have gotten off to a good start, but call me when it's August. We're counting on Latroy Hawkins to get to Rivera? The only good part of the bullpen left is Mariano, and lucky for us Yankee fans, he's money.

The third and more important thing: How is Joba going to hold up physically? Doing this during a season can't be good for his arm. It makes more sense to wait till next season before doing this.

Hopefully, things will turn for the better, and this will be the turning point of the season, and Joba responds well to this.

The Mighty Quinn Strikes Again

Larry Quinn says signing Ryan Miller and Jason Pominville to long term contracts is the top priority of the Buffalo Sabres this off-season.

Sorry, but I'll believe it when I see it, and given the track record of Tommy G. and "the mighty Quinn", Sabre fans shouldn't expect it to happen.

Last July, Quinn said he expected the team to be fine and that "the assumption that we're not going to have a very good team is a incorrect one". I guess finishing 10th in the conference is his idea of being competitive. I guess being the third team to finish one year with the most points and missing the playoffs the next is "an incorrect assumption". I guess he didn't plan to be golfing in May. I guess he didn't expect to see his team get blown out by teams like Phoenix and Anaheim, or not show up against Los Angeles and Toronto (at least twice).

This team needs veteran leadership, size on the defense, a stable backup goalie, an owner who will show up to "fan appreciation day", and a permanent captain. Until I see ONE of those things addressed, I'll choose to remain skeptical of this front office. Personally, I don't expect a god damn person to be brought in, instead Quinn will hope the youngsters "figure it out". You know, hope, like hoping the Buffalo Waterfront gets developed. That kind of hope. I expect another off season to come and go, and no free agents will be signed by Buffalo. Thus, I expect much of the same next year.

Speaking of next year, I also expect Miller and Pominville to play without those contracts Quinn said are a priority. It's a different feeling not watching the Sabres in the playoffs, and on the eve of the Stanley Cup playoffs, it's quite obvious the Sabres are a mess.

Oh well, it could be worse. You could be a member of Leafs Nation.

2008 Baseball Preview

I don't know about you, but if I spend any more time thinking about the Sabres, my head will explode.

Baseball had it's official opening day yesterday, and here are my predictions for the 2008 season.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

East - This goes against everything I believe in, but facts are facts, and I have to pick the Red Sox to win the division. Their pitching is better than my Yankees. I like Toronto third, then Tampa (shockingly), and Baltimore last.

Central - It's going to be a tight race between Detroit and Cleveland. I'll give Detroit the slight edge. Chicago third, then Minnesota and KC

West - Give me the Angels. I think the Mariners are overrated. What's all the hoopla about for Erik Bedard? Breaking news: he sucked in Baltimore. Seattle will finish 2nd, then Oakland and Texas

Wild card - Yankees

NATIONAL LEAGUE

East - Mets have the better pitching, and therefore, will win the east over PHI and ATL. The Nationals have a nice looking yard, but will finish fourth. FLA will be last.

Central - The Cubbies and the Brewers will both make the playoffs, but the CUBS will win the central.

West - I like Joe Torre and the Dodgers. I think he'll be very successful in Chavez Ravine.

Wild card - Brewers

That's how they'll finish the regular season. Here's how the playoffs will go:

ALDS - Angels over Yankees and Tigers over Red Sox

NLDS - Mets over Brewers and Dodgers over Cubs

It's Not Miller Time

I'm going out on a limb here, but the Buffalo Sabres are going to miss the playoffs.

I think we all agree that Ryan Miller has not played up to his potential. Especially after his play in the playoffs the last two years. Tonight vs Ottawa, he gave two bad goals, and despite the fact he made saves in the shootout for once, Miller has let in some pretty soft goals this year.

Which brings up this question: Is Miller worth $6 million a year or more? Before we answer that question, we first need to place Miller in relation to the other starting goalies in the NHL. Here are my rankings of all starting goalies:

1. Brodeur (NJ), 2. Luongo (VAN), 3. Lundqvist (NYR), 4. Kiprusoff (CGY), 5. Nabokov (SJ). 6. Giguere (ANA), 7. Turco (DAL), 8. Bryzgalov (PHX), 9. Theodore (COL), 10. DiPietro (NYI), 11. Fleury (PIT), 12. Vokoun (FLA), 13. Smith (Lightning), 14. Osgood (DET), 15. Gerber (OTT), 16. Khabibulin (CHI), 17. Price (MTL), 18. Biron (PHI), 19. Miller (Sabres), 20. Huet (WSH).

19th out of 30. Average. Not elite, but not Andrew Raycroft or Ray Emery (tied for last in my rankings) either.

The problem with Miller is he's overpriced, overhyped, and overrated. I haven't bought the notion that Miller's "lights out" in shootouts and breakaways. He's stopped about HALF of the shots he's faced in the shootout this year. That's sad. You've got a better chance of walking out of the casino with thousands than seeing Miller win a shootout.

Or is the problem Jim Corsi, the goalie coach for the Sabres, who in the 1979-1980 season with Edmonton, had a GAA of 3.65. Have you noticed that he's constantly let goals in when players shoot over his glove? Maybe if he wasn't on his knees before every single shot, he'd be able to stop more shots. I'm just sayin.

The bottom line is this: If Miller doesn't take less than $6 million from the Sabres, Id rather see what Jhonas Enroth's got. He's supposedly the next Henrik Lundqvist.

I'd rather have the next Lundqvist than the current Miller. Wouldn't you?

The Real Story - Sabres Edition

There are some people in sports that don't tell you why something is important. Luckily, I'm here to tell you.

It's obvious the Buffalo Sabres won't make the playoffs this year, and blaming the owner, upper management (Larry Quinn), the coaching staff, Ryan Miller's poor goaltending, Harry Neale not being a better color analyst than Jim Lorentz, or whatever else Sabre fans are upset about isn't going to change things. You have to forget about this year and look to next year.

On second thought, that might not be a very good idea.

The real story is if recent history is any indication, the Buffalo Sabres might be in big trouble. Even though they aren't first in the league and people are bitching and moaning, this year reminds me of last year when everyone was enjoying the best team in the NHL, and not seeing the doom that was ahead. Of course, nobody thinks ahead in this town. As always, I have to do it, and I have a feeling that last year's offseason could be small potatoes to this year's offseason. Here's what I see:

1. The Sabres begin talks to extend the contract of Ryan Miller, to which Miller says something to the extent of "I'm not talking until you get some good defensemen in front of me". Larry Quinn and Tom Golisano laugh at him and refuse. When his contract is up in 2009, Miller goes to Detroit, who because of his ties to Michigan State, offers a contract somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 years/60 million dollars. Miller signs said contract.

2. GM Darcy Regier, who I have criticized in the past, realizes the Sabres aren't committed to give him the tools to win, realizes his best chance at a cup are with a different organization. He leaves, taking everyone in the front office with him. Quinn and Golisano can't be reached for comment.

3. Lindy Ruff, who has done wonders with this year's poor team, also realizes he can't win a cup in Buffalo and leaves town. Like with Regier, Quinn and Golisano can't be reached for comment.

4. Watching their goalie, GM, and coach leave, fans grow even more concerned about ownership's commitment to winning and stage a protest outside HSBC Arena. In response, Quinn and Golisano hold a press conference and will say something to the extent of " we are committed to bringing a cup to Buffalo". Ownership then fails to sign any free agents and fans stop showing up to games, stop buying merchandise, stop caring.

5. Tom Golisano, citing the fact that the money's not coming in anymore, sells the team to a investor, who moves the team to Hamilton, Ontario. Fans are outraged and want answers. Local media try to contact Tom Golisano, who has moved with his family to Florida in the middle of the night, and refuses to comment about anything "Sabres related".

I hope I'm wrong, but I've got a bad feeling about next year in Sabreland.

Special Commentary 5 - Betrayed

Betrayal.

It is one of the most powerful words in the English language. To take the trust and loyalty of a person or group and use it against them is one of the most unforgivable things a human being can do in this life. Yet last Wednesday, Bills owner Ralph Wilson did just that. He took the opportunity on an international stage and betrayed the fans of the Buffalo Bills by putting down the city of Buffalo, its inhabitants, and the fans of its team in condescending, arrogant fashion. He told the entire world about the dwindling population, the city's increasing number of lost jobs and empty buildings. Things that most people ALREADY KNEW. Later on, Mr. Wilson was seen cracking jokes with MLSE (Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment) chairman Larry Tanenbaum and Jays owner Ted Rogers. All of this in front of the media and Bills COO Russ Brandon.

I'm not a Bills fan, Mr. Wilson, but WHO IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE? What kind of sick joke was that press conference? It's the same thing as offering somebody a free ride, tying their ankles to the bumper of the car,driving 70 mph down the highway, watching the body bounce off the pavement, and screaming out the window "enjoying the free ride?".

Make no mistake, Mr. Wilson, your exhibition at that press conference was nothing short of embarrassing. Your constant cries of being in a small market hold no merit with me. Green Bay and Indianapolis have won championships. Cleveland lost their Browns, then regained them. Yet, the Bills can't compete because they are "a small market". Sorry, sir, but that ship has sailed. Here's an idea for you, Ralph. Instead of bitching and complaining and telling jokes about the city, how about trying to win championships for that city that quite frankly, deserves a world championship team the most.

Or is there a goal to all of this, Mr. Wilson? Is it your goal to make the Bills attractive to groups like MLSE and Rogers Communications. Oh, who am I kidding, of course it is. That's why you won't sell the team to ensure it stays in Buffalo. That's why you'll crack jokes at Buffalo's expense. THERE'S NO OTHER EXPLANATION!

Whether or not it's your goal to move the team, your display at that press conference was uncalled for. There's NO excuse for what you did. There is a well-defined line between telling the truth and alienating your fan base, and any owner knows that is a line that's not to be crossed. Yet, you did that anyway, Ralph! You unapologetically, unashamedly, unbelievably, unforgivably crossed it, and now you need to know how history will judge you for crossing that line. Your name keeps coming up for the Pro Football Hall Of Fame. Despite all the good you have done for this league, founding the old AFL, and all the things you've done for small markets, you actions at the press conference should keep you out of the Hall Of Fame FOREVER.

Why? It's something you should know a lot about: Character. You keep saying you want players with character, but after that performance on Wednesday, it's obvious you lack character. Furthermore, that little jokefest showed how little respect you have for your fans. Quite frankly sir, you showed the world what little class you have. No owner would ever think about treating fans like that. Isn't it ironic, Ralph, that you lack character, yet you want a team that has it.

The former heavyweight champion of the world, Joe Louis, served this country during World War II. He defended his title belt by beat German Max Schmeling in a heavily promoted bout before enlisting in the Army in 1942. This country showed it's appreciation by demanding Louis pay about a million dollars in taxes. Louis had to fight exhibition fights in Japan, appear on game shows, even wrestled for a couple of years to try to earn enough money to pay back the government. Mr. Wilson, these fans have supported 8 years of no playoff football. They sold out all eight games last year for a 7-9 team, and THIS is how you show your appreciation, by stabbing them in the back with that performance?

Again, sir, I'm not a Bills fan, but even I can read the writing on the wall. I know when a fan base is getting screwed. Tonight, Mr. Wilson, I accuse you of stabbing Bills nation in the back. I accuse you of embarrassing the fans beyond belief. I accuse you, Mr. Wilson of being a unholy, heartless, condescending, incompetent jackass.

If this is all your going to do, Ralph, then spare them further embarrassment and move the Bills NOW! Do it in the middle of the night if you have to. I'll even drive the Mayflower truck myself. Hell, I'll do it for free, because if we've learned anything from February 6, 2008, this "Toronto experiment" isn't just a money grab thing. It's a "stab Buffalo in the back, kick them while they're down and move them out of Buffalo PDQ" thing wrapped in a deceitful package called "improving the viability of the Bills in Buffalo".

Ralph Wilson, you treat people in this town like they are doormats, something I expect from a loser like Mike Schopp. Fans in Buffalo deserve better than to be Toronto's doormat, and if you can't see that, then there's a special place in hell for you; and then, you'll be Buffalo's doormat.

Perfect Patriots

History will be made Sunday night in Glendale, Arizona. Either the Patriots will complete their 19-0 season, or the Giants will pull off the biggest upset in the history of sports.

The G-men have been unstoppable on the road, and while they will be the "road" team on Sunday, I'm pretty sure that the Patriots will have no trouble carving up the Giants secondary. Expect HUGE games from Brady, Moss, Welker, and every other component of their offense. This might be the greatest offense in sports history, let alone NFL history. I'm not optimistic that New York's defense can stop the Pats.

While the Patriots offense gets all the credit, their defense has gone under the radar. I don't think Eli can get his offense down the field and score touchdowns, and the Giants are going to need touchdowns instead of settling for field goals if they want to have any chance.

I really like the Patriots to close the show, and I think the 12-14 point spread is a little low. I think this game is going to be a blowout and be over by halftime.

I like the Patriots 45-16!

Special Commentary 4 - Absentee Owner

It seems that the Sabres seven game losing streak isn't enough to pull away Lawrence Quinn away from his stalled waterfront "vision" and make changes. Even worse, this slump can't pull B. Thomas Golisano away from watching old Sabres games on the DVR. How else does it explain the chilling, puzzling, borderline arrogant silence of the Sabres' "savior".

This team can't score, can't stop goals from going in, can't get good goaltending from an "elite" goalie. Their 50-million dollar man is struggling to show he's worthy of that contract. Nolan Pratt continues to sit in the press box, while Dimitri Kalinin continues to fumble the puck away. If not for the struggles of the Southeast division, the Sabres would be last in the east.

The days immediately following the departure of our co-captains, we at least heard from Quinn. You, Mr. Golisano, continue to be silent. That begs the question: Where are you, Mr. Golisano? Why haven't we heard from you, Mr. Golisano? Do you not care anymore, Mr. Golisano?

Why are we treating B. Thomas like he's a scared cow or something? He should and must be held accountable for this year's failure like we held Darcy and Lawrence. Why is he "off limits"? Because he saved the team from bankruptcy? Because he brought asses back to HSBC Arena to watch the team? Because they changed the logo and sold a ton of stuff, in turn, making trucks loads of money? Speaking of money, Mr. Golisano, why don't you spend some of the money you made on jerseys and shirts and make this team into a cup contender every year? This team can't be a contender just whenever you feel like spending cash. Are you that cheap? Are you next going to pull a Ralph Wilson and say that we can't compete with big market teams, and "cash to the cap", and question the long term stability of the franchise? Are you going to move home games to Hamilton or Erie to expand the fanbase? Did you watch the Winter Classic, sir? Did you see 70,000 plus freeze outside for your Sabres? What about the 19,000 who filled your arena because they couldn't get tickets? Is this how you show your appreciation for our support and loyalty? We're fans, not hostages, and right now, we're hostages to a disappointing campaign.

You bring back Lawrence Quinn, a man who can't accomplish one task successfully, much less two. Look at the Buffalo Waterfront. It hasn't changed one bit since I moved here SEVEN YEARS AGO!!!! The waterfront looks the same now as it did in September 2000. That's pathetic. Just like this hockey team. Darcy Regier got a lot of the blame, some of it deserved for his extreme hesitation to make trades, his inability to hand out long contracts, and his policy of not re-negotiating during the season. He's not in charge of spending, though. That's your job, evidently, and you and Quinn, and soon it will be you and Quinn alone, feel that this team is perfect, and will go the cheap route.

You guys have been criticized for being conservative, for being condescending, for being cold and clueless. You took the trust and support of the fans, one of the most loyal fan bases in the NHL, and you left them high and dry. You must have made a compromise with the devil. One in which the only things being compromised are the trust of your loyal fans and the chance at a Stanley Cup.

In plain English, Mr. Golisano: Things need to change, and they need to change, now. Not tomorrow, next week, next year, or heaven forbid, longer.RIGHT NOW. Changes need to happen and you can make it happen. Harry Truman once said "we can never know what is in store for us". If you continue down this slippery slope, Mr. Golisano, Sabre fans will know what's in store: more failure. You must change things and you must do it now.

Come out of your spider hole, Mr. Golisano, answer the critics, and give the fans what they want. A Stanley Cup contender.

New Year's At The Ralph

Yesterday, I got to go to the NHL Winter Classic, and yes, it was pretty cool (pun intended!). Here are a couple of pics.

One of the best parts for me was seeing the game go into a shootout, making it the first shootout I got to see live. It's the best thing the NHL did coming back from the lockout. Nobody left, and everyone was on their feet for it. It was fitting that Sidney Crosby ended the game and won it for Pittsburgh.

The fireworks, the flyover by 4 blackhawk helicopters, the image of a hockey rink on the 50 yard line of a football field. Everything about it was tremendous, and the city of Buffalo and the fans who were there should be very proud of what they saw and accomplished yesterday.

Speaking of the Ralph, it's primary tenants are apparently in need of a General Manager after Marv Levy stepped down last week. There's talk that the Bills will stay conservative and promote from within with Jim Overdorf.

The thing that bothers me about the Sabres and Bills is their front offices lack any guts to try and win a championship. The goal of every team is to win a championship, even if it means losing money, and it seems to me that Darcy Regier, Larry Quinn and Ralph Wilson aren't willing to try to win a championship at the expense of losing money.

The Bills should get somebody from the New England Patriots, specifically Patriots VP Scott Pioli. It seems the Patriots know how to win, seeing they went 16-0 this regular season and are on their way to another Super Bowl, and if the Bills stay in house and be conservative, it will seem they are content with finishing 7-9 and being mediocre every year. I don't want Jim Overdorf promoted, I don't want anyone else from the Bills front office promoted, and unless it's Pioli or someone else from the Patriots, I won't be happy with who the Bills bring in.

Prove me wrong, Ralph, do the right thing, and hire Scott Pioli. Pay him a gazillion dollars, give him anything and everything he wants, do whatever you have to do to bring him here. Do it not only for the organization, but for the fans. The same fans who, just yesterday, filled your stadium to see a hockey game. The same fans who will fill Ralph Wilson Stadium and at least 3 other Ralph Wilson Stadiums when you win a Super Bowl a couple of years from now, all because of the decisions your GM, the one you hired in January 2007, made.

Do it for them!

Ringing In 2008

Last year in this space, I made 10 predictions about what I thought would happen in 2007. I batted about .500. Not bad for an amateur.

Here are my predictions for 2008.

1. The Buffalo Sabres will continue their recent hot streak into the second half of the season and make the playoffs comfortably. They won't win the Stanley Cup though, falling short in the Eastern Conference Finals for the third consecutive year.

2. The Bills will make the playoffs in the 2008 season, only to lose in the wild-card round.

3. The Tampa Bay Lightning will win their 2nd Stanley Cup in June, and I'll be there for the parade this time.

4. The Tampa Bay Rays (or whatever the hell they are called) will, once again, finish with baseball's worst record. Maybe they'll move to Buffalo in 2010.

5. San Antonio will win the NBA title again, the Boston Celtics will win the Eastern Conference, the Orlando Magic will win their division, and Isiah Thomas will be fired.

6. I'll finally get started trying to lose weight, and I'll be successful. This my New Year's resolution.

Winless No More

I find it really amusing that the Patriots are 12-0 and the Dolphins, who have the last unbeaten season back in 1972, are 0-12. While the Patriots will finish 16-0, I don't believe the Dolphins will finish the season winless.

Look who they play on Sunday: The Buffalo Bills. A team that can't even sell out their "rivalry" game, and therefore, nobody in the WNY will see their team lose. A team that has absolutely no business being in the playoff race, and a team who's star running back has a ankle injury that kept him out of the last few games.

In today's salary-cap, free agency NFL, it's impossible for a team to finish 0-16. In theory, it's also impossible to finish a season undefeated, but it looks like the Patriots will do just that. In addition, the Bills haven't scored a touchdown on offense in who knows when and their defense has been lucky. Yeah, they've been lucky. Sunday, their luck will run out.

I think the Dolphins will win big and end any stupid talk of playoffs for the Buffalo Bills. Dolphins 77-3.

Football Night In The Buff

The New England Patriots continue their road to perfection on Sunday night against the hapless loser franchise that is the Buffalo Bills. The Vegas line of 15.5 is way, way too low. The Pats should be favored by at LEAST 50. Here's how bad it's gonna be for the Bills and their fans. The only way the Bills will have a snowball's chance in hell of winning is if Tom Brady gets lost on the way to the Ralph.

Brady and Moss and Welker and the rest of their offense should have a field day against this undersized, undertalented, overachieving defense. I don't care what the Bills have done lately. Their wins have come against absolute crap. They barely beat the WINLESS Dolphins, beat the loser Jets twice, the Bungals, the Ravens on pure luck and bad coaching, and could not close the show at home on a Monday night vs the Cowboys.

It looks like J.P. Losman will start for the Bills, and quite frankly, it wouldn't make a difference if the great Jim Kelly started on Sunday night. Their offense has sputtered this season, managing a season high 33 vs the aforementioned Bungals. Trent Edwards will probably have to come in and try to save the Bills, again!

I understand that Sunday night football will be big for Buffalo and their fans, but unlike the Monday nighter vs the Cowboys, they won't "shock the world" nor will they make it a competitive game, Hell, even the last place Sabres have a better chance of beating Ottawa on Thursday (which won't happen), than the Bills of pulling the upset against NE.

My prediction: New England 109-0

The Bandwagon's Sinking

The Sabres are struggling, and everyone's upset.

The message boards are full of things like: "our goalie sucks", "If Drury and Briere were still here...", and other negative stuff. It's gotten to the point where Buffalo News "columnist" Jerry Sullivan offers his two cents on why the Sabres suck.

Me? I'm more upset with the fact that people like Jerry Sullivan and Mike Bianchi have been given blogs by their respective newspapers than I am with the Sabres' problems.

Most of last year's President's trophy winning team is still here. Lindy Ruff is still coaching this team. The talent is there. The only thing that's different is that the two captains from last year aren't. A team isn't comprised of two players.

That said, there are concerns. The offense is struggling, Thomas Vanek's trying too hard to justify his 50 million dollar contract, the defense is very weak, Ryan Miller's not as good as he was a year ago, and this team's lacking leadership and confidence. However, even with all the problems the Sabres have, I feel they will get through this.

As I've said before, winning will cure any and every problem fans will have. When the Sabres start winning, and they will, I guarantee you will hear less and less about our former co-captains, our management, our goalie, and our other issues. The bandwagoners who have or are about to jump off will get back on, and a certain Buffalo News sports columnist who's never happy, even when his team wins a championship, won't have anything to complain about.

Winning solves everything. Everything except Jerry Sullivan's views on sports.

Nothing But Smoke And Mirrors

I'm sorry, but the worst team in the NFL isn't in Miami or St. Louis. The worst team in the NFL is the Buffalo Bills.

I know both the Dolphins and Rams are winless, but the Bills are three miracles away from joining that list. If the Ravens and Jets both ran the ball more in their games vs the Bills, they would have won those games.

This Bills team is nothing but smoke and mirrors. Don't believe me? Go look at the stats. Their defense is 30th in the league. They allow 4.7 yards per carry and 128 yards rushing a game. Their offense is simply anemic, no matter if it's J.P. Losman or Trent Edwards at QB. They only have two passing TD's and throw for just over 145 yards per game. Only the San Francisco 49ers have a less effective offense than Buffalo. How in the hell are they 3-4?

In addition to the fact that they have no defense and no offense, they have no coaching. Dick Jauron is a loser as a head coach. His career record as a head coach is 46-63. 46-63. That is simply pathetic.

I believe that both the Rams and the Dolphins are better than the Buffalo Bills. Hell, even the UB Bulls are better than the Bills. What does that tell you?

Falling Leaves

If there are changes made by the Toronto Maple Leafs, it's safe to say their performance against the Buffalo Sabres on Monday here in Sabre-Land will be the reason why.

It's very interesting to hear the reaction coming out of the "mecca of hockey". The Leafs squandered a two goal lead halfway through the third period, then blew leads of 3-2 and 4-3, before losing in OT after Bryan McCabe shot the puck into his own net. It's been a couple of rough days for the Leaf defenseman, but the Toronto Sun made the entire situation worse by using the headline "Bryan McKlutz". Whomever's responsible should be fired. It was classless and downright disrespectful.

I almost feel sorry for McCabe. Although he dosen't deserve to be paid like Nicklas Lidstrom or Scott Niedermayer, nor does he have their talent or abilites, he's still a decent defenseman. I wonder how quick he wants to leave Toronto.

As far as the Sabres are concerned, Monday's game wasn't bad, but they didn't play well either. I felt they dominated for the first 15 minutes, the Toronto took over the last five minutes and the entire second period, then Buffalo took back momentum the rest of the way. Even though they won the game, I'm sure there were parts of the Sabres game Lindy Ruff didn't like.

Even though the defense was excellent against the Thrashers and the Capitals, I still feel the defense is a liability and may be the one thing that prevents this team from fulfilling their fans dreams of a Stanley Cup.

Another area that I would like to see continued success from is the power play and penalty kill. After the first two games vs the Islanders, both the PP and the PK have improved, thanks to the improved play of Jaro Spacek . The PP had a off night against the leafs, but the PK was excellent (albeit just 3 penalties on the Sabres). I'd like to see continued success from both special team units.

2007 Sabres Season Preview

I've been so busy with the Bills and their eventual 0-16 season, the rebirth of the Bucs, the FSU Seminoles and their new coaches, the Yankees and their charge to another AL east title, and tomorrow's middleweight title showdown between Jermain Taylor and Kelly Pavlik, I haven't even thought about the Buffalo Sabres. So, before I forget, here's a preview of the 07-08 team.

Like a lot of you, I was disappointed about the events of the offseason, and I will admit, I overreacted a bit, but the difference between me and everyone else is I got over it and looked towards next season.

The offense, from what I've been able to see and hear, looks to be OK. There's plenty of guys who will fill the void. Derek Roy, Max Afinogenov, and Thomas Vanek should pick up the slack. Vanek, especially, will feel more pressure due to his 7yr/$50 million contract.

Defensively, this team will have to improve ten-fold. Jaroslav Spacek needs to turn it around the most. I liked the acquisition, but his first season with the Sabres was forgettable. I'd like to think he was adjusting to a new team, but there's no excuses this year. The same goes for Dmitri Kalinin, who seemed to be tied to the bench in the Eastern Conference Finals. It has been revealed he was playing with a sports hernia during the Ottawa series, which would explain his bad play, but he still needs to step up. Toni Lydman, Henrik Tallinder, and Brian Campbell should be solid once again. Nathan Paestch will see substantial playing time while Teppo Numminen recovers from heart surgery.

Ryan Miller is a very good goaltender, but he's not yet in the same group with Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo, but he's in the same group with Henrik Lundqvist, another very good goalie. Jocelyn Thibault is a decent backup and is a better option than Ty Conkin was, but if Miller goes down for a period of time, the season's over.

So, how will the Sabres do? I think very well. They will finish as Northeast division champs once again, but not win the Presidents trophy again. They will probably be the 3 seed in the playoffs, although depending on how good the Southeast is this year, they might be a 2 seed. As to how far they go, I'm not sure, because the east is so wide open. Ask 10 hockey fans, and you'll get 10 different answers. The only thing I know is Buffalo will be good once again this year.

By the way, as far as the fight is concerned, I like Jermain Taylor by unanimous decision tomorrow night!

Not Going Into That Good Night

The AL east has already been decided, and it's one of the greatest comebacks in the history of sports.

The New York Yankees, 14 and a 1/2 games back at one point during the season, now trail by a game and a half. That's right, 1 1/2 games behind the Red Sox. Of course, I knew we would be in this position. Even though the Bronx Bombers were "too far behind" to catch them, I wasn't worried. When this season's final pitch is thrown, the Yankees will win another AL east crown, and you can take that to the bank.

If you read my blog, I told you Jonathon Papelbon wasn't a savior, and if you saw tonight's game, he showed he's nothing more than a mediocre reliever. Their bullpen isn't much better with Eric Gagne even if he returned to the level he was at with the Dodgers, and thank god he didn't. I hope Boston's happy watching Gagne blow game after game.

The only downside is that Detroit and Seattle are playing themselves out of the wild card. That means the Red Sox will probably still make the playoffs, and even though it's fun to watch the Yankees and Sox play each other in the playoffs, it's even more fun for the Yankees to be playing in October and the Red Sox and their fans to watch on TV. I wish they would do away with the wild card, so undeserving loser teams like the Sox don't get in the postseason.

The Yankees aren't about to go into that proverbial good night. Just like they didn't in 1978.

Looking Ahead To Bills/Broncos

The NFL season began last night with Indianapolis beating New Orleans 41-10. On Sunday, the Bills season begins at home vs the Denver Broncos.

As everyone knows, the Bills have rid themselves of most of their talented players and replaced them with rookies who, in a few years, could be talented. Their offense was supposedly the most dangerous in the history of the NFL, yet in the preseason looked like the most boring in the world. Meanwhile, this defense is so ridiculously undersized, I bet the University of Buffalo could score 30-40 points, and UB's the worst college football team EVER. Even Appalachian State's better than UB.

It will be fun to watch Travis Henry gain AT LEAST 150 yards on this Bills defense. They are very thin depth wise on the D-line, their linebackers are very short and small, and without replacing Nate Clements, their secondary is vulnerable.

Offensively, J.P. has regressed and is spending more time with "Buffalo lives", a program he created to try to revitalize this city, than focusing on improving his skills. Marshawn Lynch is going to be a pro bowler 2-3 years from now, but not be the answer yet, and outside of Lee Evans, the Bills don't have a deep ball threat.

I don't see Buffalo winning this game. I like Denver 34-3.

Special Commentary 3 - Start, Stop, Repeat

The year was 1999. The Y2K scare was sweeping across America, the Stars beat the Sabres for the Stanley Cup, and the SEGA Dreamcast was released worldwide.

1999 was also the last time the Buffalo Bills made the playoffs. Since the "music city miracle", the Bills have missed the playoffs for 7 straight seasons. More concerning is the fact that the Bills have not had stability at the quarterback position since Jim Kelly retired in 1996. Rob Johnson, Doug Flutie, Alex Van Pelt, Kelly Holcomb, and Drew Bledsoe have all seen action as the starting QB. Now, Bills fans have put their hopes on the shoulders of J.P. Losman.

J.P. Losman has tried to show that he's the answer, but through 2 seasons, and the past three preseason games, I've seen all I need to see. Sure, he's made some good throws here and there, but he's terribly inconsistent, and appears to have regressed during this preseason.

Then again, it's obvious this franchise has regressed during this preseason. In fact, since 1999, they have a 46-66 record. What happened to a franchise that went to four straight Super Bowls? Why has this team not been able to find a competent QB since Kelly retired? Why does this organization feel that an undersized defense that can't tackle is going to be successful?

I could sit here and describe all the boneheaded decisions Tom Donahoe made, but at least he realized a big defense was a key to success. I want to think Marv Levy is making progress and changing things at One Bills Drive. I want to think Dick Jauron knows what he's doing. I'm willing to give them some time, but the patience of this blogger is getting thin.

As the 2007 season nears, I hate to say this, but this season is lost before it even begins. This team will be lucky to be competitive in a game, much less winning a game. I just hope that maybe, just maybe, the sacrifices made this season will pay off in the years ahead. Just what kind of sacrifices did the Bills make this season? They got rid of good players and replaced them with less talented players. They sacrificed talent and playmaking for character and wholesomeness.

Regression, sacrifice, rebuilding, starting over, call it whatever you will, but don't tell me, and don't tell anyone with a set of ears that somehow getting rid of Takeo Spikes, London Fletcher, Willis McGahee, and Nate Clements is somehow making this team more "fan friendly" and "a team we can be proud of".

I'm not proud of this team, and I'd be willing to bet that many that did are having a change of heart. How on earth can you be proud of this? This anemic offense that everybody thought would score 30-40 points a game. This grossly undersized defense that did little to no hitting during camp. This same defense that can't stop the run, stop the passing game, and stop KERRY COLLINS from making this secondary look like swiss cheese.

I ask you, Bills fans, how can you be proud of this?
